I just saw an e-mail that mentioned the second Seminole War---heck I didn't
even know they had the first one? The reason I am interested is because my
Ggrandfather received 2 Bounty Land Warrants from the US Treasury Dept. for
service fighting Indians He served in 1833 & 1835 from Bledsoe Co.Tn. Could
that have been the Seminole Wars? If not then what Indian Wars was he in?

I believe the 1833-1835 you refer to would be the Indian Removal when they
moved the Cherokee Indians. The reason I say that is because I ordered
papers for an ancestor of mine for the War of 1812. Instead they sent
me the papers of my ancestor's son for INDIAN WARS, and what it was, was
the removal of Indians and was in TN. It described where he started etc.
and the time period was the same.
I hope this helps.

I was so happy to hear about Dr Peckham's forthcoming book. Is his mail
address
the same? I will send him uptodated information to what I sent him in
1996.

I am asking this question for my sister-in-law. I don't have all the details
but want to know if any of you are familiar with this family:
On the 1830 Lauderdale County, Alabama census, James Kiddy, with a son named
Carmack Kiddy, is living next door to Cornelius Carmack. She is trying to
figure out if and why James Kiddy named his son "CARMACK".........are they
related to Cornelius Carmack?
If any of you have any information regarding this Carmack family that might
shed some light on her "Kiddy" research, I would appreciate your help.
Thank you!!!

Subject: JOHN CARMACK & JESSE CARMACK
John was born in Fredrick Co. Md. with parents Cornelius & Jane Carmack---He
moved to Washington Co. Va. & on to Bledsoe Co. Tn. He was m. twice & the
last one was Mary Daughherty. He then left Bledsoe Co. Tn. abt.1840/50 &
went to Guilford Co. NC. & at age 74 he applied for his pension. While he
was in Bledsoe Co. he lived adjacent to Jesse Carmack's farm. I think that
Jesse is John's son? Can any one show me that I am right or wrong? I don't
have access to Dar files, but they would help? His 1st. wife was named

Your posting on VaRoots sounded like a man who has most of the Carmack
records. I wonder if you have any early Carmack - Gillenwater marriages?
My ancestor was Elisha Carmack Gillenwater. His father was Joel Gillenwater
who came to Hawkins Co TN about 1782. I do not have a wife for him, and the
only reason I can see Elisha would have been named Carmack other than it was
his mother's maiden name would have been because they were neighbors in
Hawkins.
If you do not have anything for me, no reply is necessary. Good luck on your
search. Vera Boyatt

primary point is that if you sent anything last night to the list that you
might try sending it again.

Thoughts which have kept me awake nights
No book is entirely perfect
For errors will creep in;
Sometimes wrong information is sent
By someone's nearest kin.
And even printers make mistakes
For which they tear their hair;
Sometimes two people disagree
On who or what or where.
It might have been the person
Who wrote the history
It might have been the typist,
Or blame the author, me.
So if you're dead before you're born,
Or married when you're three,
Or I've omitted anyone
Who sent themselves to me.
Or your last name is not your own,
Your picture not to good,
I ask you please forgive me
I did the best I could!

THE PREPONDERANCE ULTIMATUM
By Madlyn Jamison
"I want a divorce!"
He/she then said:
"Dead ancestors fill dressers,
And lie under our beds.
They're stuffed into closets,
And piled everywhere.
A creature can't move
Or find a free chair! Forms, pedigrees, photos, Relics and books
Cover floors and the
Furniture wherever you look!
You've got to stop going
On researching jags.
I'm up to my ears with
Your boxes and bags!
But you keep on collecting
More genealogical stuff!
Then there are nights
When you don't come to bed,
'Cause you'd rather be doing
Your ancestry instead!
Since this hobby of yours
Has come on the scene,
I have not a spouse
Nor a house that is clean!
Listen well, my darling--
Take heed, my dearest--
Give up this obsession
Or I shall depart
And leave you for good--
With your SMITHS and your TARTS.
OH?? You'll need a computer--
A copier and a printer, too?
To work up MY pedigree
Before I depart?
Sheesh! My love,
You're really all heart!!"

A Commentary on Genealogy---
Our Elders Are Passing
by Jack M. Williams
Our elders are passing, one by one
Surely gone forever, until there are none.
Their bountiful memories, their knowledge of the past,
Soon will be lost, and beyond our grasp.
The past is prologue, so delicate to retain,
Slipping slowly from our grasp, til nothing remains.
For our elders are passing, so sad but true,
And with them their memories, and all that they knew.
It's urgent for sure, to record each thought,
Of every family elder, so its not for naught.
So generations remember the beauteous past,
We'll retain that knowledge, and ensure it will last.
There'll be no better time, than that right now,
To begin your quest, or to renew your vow.
So locate your elders, and schedule that meeting,
In light of the fact, that time is so fleeting.

Does anyone have any information on John Carmack b: 1773 in Frederick Co,
MD. I have him married to Mary Dougherty on January 31, 1789. I do not
know anything more about him or especially his children. I know he was
living in Bledsoe Co., Tenn. after moving from Washington Co., Va. He shows
up in the 1830/1840 Bledsoe Co, TN census. I also have the following
reference: John Carmack -W-3772- applied from Guilford Co., North Carolina,
age 74. Enlisted at Hillsboro, Orange Co., North Carolina 1781, was married
twice. First wife had 7 children, 3 died in infancy. I am not sure this is
the same John but it was contained some of my old information that I was
given when I first started looking into my genealogy.
Can anyone shed light on John and his family?

I have been sent several Genealogy Poems lately that are pretty good. Since
they don't exactly fit the Surname topic of the list I thought I'd ask and
see if anyone would mind, or like me to post them to the list. Baring that
I could send them to those who request them.
