Dale,
Thanks for emailing me back so soon. I am curious where your friend got his
information on Elizabeth' s second husband.
My Great Uncle Thomas J. Fry married Elizabeth Sylvina Carmack after her
first
husband Henry Carr died. Elizabeth and Henry had three children - Emily
Caroline, John W., and Elizabeth Carr.
Elizabeth and my Great Uncle Thomas J. Fry had three girls. Florence
Nightengale Fry who married James Miller Stephen, Susan Fry, & Julia Fry who
married N. Bates Cox.
I wonder how your friend got Elizabeth married to a John Fry. Curious to
know
where he came up with John.
How are you related to Elizabeth?

I have done some research on the Levi Carmack family. I will add some
notes to your family group (below). My comments are in {brackets}. Hope
that doing it this way is not too confusing. I am not an authority on this
family, by any means. Perhaps someone else in the group can add
information. By the way, my husband is a descendant of Levi's son William

{My note: I am not sure where Levi and his wife Elizabeth were born. On
the 1900 Claiborne Co, TN census both Martin and William (sons of Levi)
said that their parents were b. Maryland. Some of the research done by
Peters' descendants suggests that Elizabeth Peters may have been b. in
Scott Co. VA. The 1850 Lee Co. VA census gives her birth place as VA.}

Hello Cousin's

Dale ,
The source of the info on William Rhea Carmack is "Carmack Cousins Newsletter " , Vol. 1,
No.2, Dec. 1, 1984 , ( pg. 3). Robert and William Rhea are both listed as being born
abt. 1820 ...... I assumed they were probably twins , but who knows ?? Perhaps someone
out there can clear up this for us ?

I do not know who abstracted this will, but I believe it could have been
Josephine Carmack or Patsy Webster, of Bristol, VA. Forgive me if I
don't format it properly.

WILLS VOL. # 11, Page #267
I, William Carmack, Sr., of Washington Co. and State of Virginia being
desirous to settle and arrange my worldly business in a manner the most
equitable in my judgement and at the same time the least troublesome to
my surviving friends; and being of sound and disposing mind and memory,
do make and subscribe this my last Will and Testament in the manner
following, to wit:
1st--I bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Susong, one hundred dollars.
2nd--I bequeath unto my daughter, Susannah Rhea, the like sum, one
hundred dollars.
3rd--I bequeath unto my daughter Mary Gray, the like sum, one hundred
dollars.
4th--I bequeath unto my granddaughter Margaret Susong, the sum of fifty
dollars.
5th--I bequeath unto my son Cornelius Carmack, the sum of one hundred
dollars.
6th--I bequeath unto my son Robert Carmack, the sum of five hundred
dollars, also one feather bed, bedstead, and bed clothes, also one small
clothes press.
7th--The entire residue of my estate with the exception of a note due me
from Peter Hickman, I beueath unto my 5 sons, William Carmack, James
Carmack, John Carmack, Isaac Carmack and Alfred Carmack, to wit, after
alll my lawful debts and funeral expenses are paid, residue to be
equally divided among my five sons last named above, share and share
alike, and provided that the note due from Hickman (above exception) can
be collected or any part thereof, it is my will that said money be
equally divided among my six sons; last above named, to sit, William,
James, John, Isaac, Alfred, and Robert, share and share alike.
And I do hereby appoint my two sons, Cornelius and William Carmack to be
the executors of this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, I
William Carmack, Sr., do set my hand and seal this 4th day of May 1840.
WILLIAM CARMACK (Seal)
The within is declared by William Carmack, Senior, to be his last Will
and Testament in the presence of us who subscribed as witnesses, in
presence of the Testator:-
Thomas Carmack
Pleasant Carmack
Isaac Carmack (End of will)
Robert having died before that date, a codicil dated March 5, 1844 was
appended. On probate 2 dates were mentioned: "October 22, 1849" and
"Feb. 25, 1850" (note added)
This is Betty now--I believe the last 2 dates referred to above are the
date of death and maybe the petition for probate, or the probate itself.
I hope this helps some one.

Dale,
The included message from R.K.Brown is in agreement with my information
with the exception of the children for William, son of John. According
to William's will he had a daughter not listed, named Susannah. He
refers to her in his will as Susannah Rhea. The book Washington County,
VA Marriages (by Hiatt and Scott) also shows a marr. Susannah Carmack
and William Rhea, 8 Feb 1824. The William Rhea Carmack R.K. listed is
probably a grandson, instead. His will did not list another Wiliam as a
son. In summary, I have Wm's children as: Sarah, Cornelius,William,
Mary, James, Isaac (my line), Alfred, John W and Robert.
In a separate message I will post an abtract of William's will.

I recently received the following article from another researcher (thanks
Betty!) and just am getting around to reading and digesting it. I scanned
it and converted it to text and am passing it along for the rest of you that
might be interested.
670 THE CARMACKS
John Carmack (1720-1810/12) came to the
Holston Country around 1755. He purchased
3000 acres on the Virginia/Tennessee line and
became a farmer. He and his wife, Elizabeth
Barton, had six children: Cornelius, John Jr.,
William, Nellie, Mary C. Warfield, and Catherine
C. Gray. John and Elizabeth are buried on the
Mumpower Place near Highpoint.
John, Jr. (1751-57-3 Apr 1833) served in the
Revolution at the Battle of Point Pleasant. He
returned to take over his father's plantation. He
and his wife, Elizabeth (1768-1 Nov 1850), had
ten children: Pleasant, Joseph, Sarah C. Gray,
Jane C. Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret C.
Carmack, John, Thomas, and Susannab C.
Strite. They are buried in the family cemetery
on the Mumpower Place.
Pleasant (1 Jul 1804-16 Jul 1861) was
named for the battle in which his father served.
He was a cabinet maker and farmer. On 24 Nov
1861, he married Hannah Gray (18 Mar 1805-
1866) daughter of Capt. William Gray and
Mary-Davis. Pleasant was a leading organizer
of the Paperville Presbyterian Church. He
fathered five Children: William, Julia C. Moody,
Hannah C. Carmack, Mary C. Hartmen, and
John III. Pleasant and Hannah are buried in the
Walnut Grove Cemetery.
John III "Honest John" (13 Jun 1836-5 Apr
1904) inherited his father's land and
occupation. He married (14 Mar 1861) Mary
Catherine Rebecca Hagy, daughter of Martin
and Ann Anderson Hagy of Abingdon. The
union produced nine children: Pleasant, Martin,
Samuel, John, Mary C. Mattox, Sarah C. Rush,
Adah C. Rhea, Tennessee C. Cowan, and
Alexander. For health reasons, John could not
serve in the War, though his property was
invaded several times. He was a noted farmer
and stockman and a U.S. mail subcontractor.
John and Mary are buried, along with three of
their sons, in Paperville Cemetery.
Adah Texanna Carmack Rhea (10 Aug 1876-
4 Jan 1924) taught until her marriage to Dr.
John P. Rhea, Jr. (6 Feb 1872-27 Apr 1916) in
1902. They had three children: Matthew
Wendell, Mary Beuloxia, and Eva R. Buckles.
Following her husband's death, Adah moved
her children to Bristol where she lived out the
remainder of her years. She is burled, with her
husband, in Weavers Cemetery. Submitted by:

I'm getting click happy with the mouse and sending these before I finished
it.
As for the Bledsoe Co cemetery records, my father was there earlier in the
summer and checked the listings and found no reference to John being buried
there. I agree it is reasonable that Jesse may have stayed in Bledsoe until
John died.
OK, now I answered everything and will send again.

Dale,
If the John we're looking for isn't the one from N. Carolina, then evidently
we need to look elsewhere. Another John who was born in the right time
period
was the son of Cornelius Carmack and Mary Cookson. He was born in l775.
Does
anyone know anything about him?
Also, does anyone have access to the cemetery records of Bledsoe County and
also
Sequatchie County? The Bledsoe County John might have died in Bledsoe
County.
It seems that Jesse didn't leave Bledsoe County until after John disappeared
from the census records. If Jesse was indeed John's son it seems reasonable
to assume that he probably would have stayed in Bledsoe County until after
his
father's death.
I hope someone out there can help us.

I received the following email [I cut out parts to leave the primary
sections for discussion]. I do not necessarily agree with the information
but thought maybe some of you might help me make sense of it. For instance
the children of John Carmack list below as: Joseph, Pleasant, Thomas Benton,
Elizabeth, John Jr., and Levi.
I cannot match this group of children to any parent, can anyone help here?
I left the reunion section in for everyone's general information. I have
never attended a reunion but think it would be fun. Anyone know of others?
thanks,
dale

Dale;
I'm having a difficult time in looking up the information you requested in
my wife's files. She does not have her genealogy on computer. On the
Carmack ancestral chart there is a Jesse Ann Carmack born 1820 TN - died
1871 Galvaston, TX ma. 1863- Mary Ann Boyd Ferrell. This appears to be
his second wife and the children are Thomas Green, Jesse Jr., Mark, Wallen,
and William. Children by 1st wife are Margaret, Tenny, and Phronie. Jesse
Ann is shown on the chart as son of Jesse C. born ca. 1769. John Carmack
of Bledsoe C. TN br. 1771 in MD, ma. (1) Mary ?, (2) Mary Daugnerty:
children; Joseph, Pleasant, Thomas Benton, Elizabeth, John Jr., and Levi.
Line carried forward on Pleasant, only. This chart was brought to one of
the reunions by a Carmack in Nasville, TN.
Now about the reunion. The reunion was held in Livingston, TN and headed
up by Agnes Jones of Chattanooga, TN. She also, put out a Carmack Cousins
Newsletter from 1984 through May of 1992. The reunion
affair was a dinner on Sat. night at a local cafe and then pot luck lunch
at the State Park on Sunday. After Agnes dropped out, the group split. The
Sam Davis descendants begin having their reunion at Crossville. The
reunion at Crossville is open to Carmack descendants, but it seems to be
attended by mostly the Sam Davis Carmack families and an occasional cousin
like the one from Nasville that drops in. The count seems to be around 25
or so. They have a Sat. night buffet style dinner at a local Motel. The
get together last for about three hours.
