How did our ancestors start their emigration? On my 2009 trip to Dumfries, Scotland, I
found an advertisement in the 1837 "Dumfries Weekly Journal" for a steamer trip,
(thrice weekly), on the "Countess of Nithdale" from Carsethorn, (Viking
origins), on the Stoway Firth in Kirkcudbrightshire and also Glencaple on the River Nith
in Dumfrieshire to Liverpool, England. Five pence for passage on the deck and 14 pence
for a cabin. This water passage would have saved the emigrants 156 mile overland/six to
seven day, trip. NOTE: Some immigrants were required to bring their own FOOD for an
six-eight week passage! Yours Aye, John
