The following is a quote from William M. Carlton. I question some of what he
wrote, specifically the part I set apart. If this is true does anyone know
of this source?
"Thomas Carleton is said by some, including the late Milton D. Wilson of
Bartow, Florida, to have been born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 10
May 1747; but this I have not been able to confirm to my satisfaction.
Although there were Carletons in Chester County from 1711 or earlier until
the time of the Revolutionary War or later, I have been unable to establish
a definite connection between them and our own branch of the family. Neither
have I been able to confirm that Thomas was descended from Edward Carleton
of Rowley, Massachusetts, who came to that colony with Rev. Ezekiel Rogers'
company in 1638. Although this has been claimed by a number of people who
have prepared abbreviated family histories, <the descendants of Edward
Carleton have been well accounted for up to the time of the Revolutionary
War>. Our branch of the family was already settled in North Carolina at that
time; and up to then none of Edward's descendants had migrated southward.
Thomas Carleton had an older brother, John Carleton, who settled in North
Carolina prior to 1757, at which time his eldest son was born in Craven
County; and he is said to have come from Chester County, Pennsylvania. This
requires further research."
