Cornet Edward Carlton Jr. was born on 20 February 1690/91 in Bradford, Essex
County, Massachusetts.1,2
He settled in Haverhill (West Parish) in the Province of Massachusetts Bay,
where we find deeds of land to him as early as 1705. He held a Commission as
Cornet of the First Company, belonging to the Regiment of which Richard
Salterstall was Colonel. Said commission bears the date of "the sixth year
of the reign of George I" (1717). He is distinguished from the other
Edward's by the title "Cornet."
Most of Edward Carleton, Jr.'s, papers are still preserved, and are now in
the possession of Israel Carleton who lives on the "Carleton Place" where
the Cornet lived and died. This property has been in the uninterrupted
possession and ownership of the Carleton family for nearly 200 years. His
monument, as well as that of his wife, is still standing in the old
churchyard in West Parish, Haverhill, Massachusetts, near the old homestead.
There are very few of these old memorials to the dead left standing,
although this ancient burial place is completely filled and has ceased to be
used.
He married Hannah Kimball, daughter of Captain Richard Kimball and Sarah
Spofford, on 13 June 1712 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.3,4,5,6
She died on 9 September 1741 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.7
[Here is some speculation by me in regards to another marriage by Edward.]
<He married Elizabeth Houlton on 7 November 1745 in Salem, Essex County,
Massachusetts; The Salem vital records show an Edward Carlton from Haverhill
marrying Elizabeth Houlton. Since Edward was a widower at the time it would
not be unreasonable to assume that this is the correct Edward.8> He died on
29 November 1749 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 58.1,9 He
was buried in West Parish Cemetery, Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts;
"Here lies the body of Cornet Edward Carlton who departed this life, Nov.
29, 1749, in the 59 year of his age."1,10
Is this a reasonable assumption? I could find no other Edward that would fit
the bill. The following are some of the sources I used. BTW does anyone know
if Israel Carlton is still in possession of Edward's papers?
