Ok, One more.
Here is what I know about Leonard (also spelled LENNARD) and Daniel
in NC.
THOMAS TRICE's will was proved in Nov 1803 in Orange Co, NC.
He lists LEONARD CARLTON, his brother EDWARD TRICE, and JOHN MOORE as
executors.
Witnesses were WILLIAM TRICE, EDWARD TRICE, and JOHN MOORE.
Left his wife Sarey Trice half of his property in BRUNSWICK CO VA.
Left various things to his three daughters, BETSY CARLTON, SALLY
BARBY (Barbee) and NANCY HOUSE.
Some grandchildren are listed by name, most importantly THOMAS TRICE
CARLTON, who received 400
acres in Orange Co NC.
One 26 Feb 1793 Thomas Trice gave daughter Ann House 200 acres.
Witnesses were DANIEL CARLTON and SAMUEL DANIEL.
EDWARD TRICE, who may or may not be the brother of Thomas, witnessed
the gift of
one negro girl from SAMUEL DANIEL to his son, JOHN DANIEL. May 1790.
25 Jun 1799 JOHN DANIEL testified in court that he had been HENRY
TRICE's overseer and that
some 35 years earlier he witnessed THOMAS coming from the house of
THOMAS' father-in-law, BERNARD MAJOR of
DINWIDDIE CO VA the day after the marriage of THOMAS and MAJOR's
daughter. JOHN said he was about 21 at the time and was familiar with
both the Major and Trice households. He came to NC as THOMAS TRICE's
overseer.
JOHN DANIEL was apparently born in MIDDLESEX CO VA and shows up on
the NC tax rolls by 1779. One of JOHN's daughters
married the son of EDWARD TRICE, but it is unclear which EDWARD this
is. Another daughter, NANCY ANN, married
DANIEL CARLTON. JOHN DANIEL's will was probated in 1837 in Orange Co
NC. He left several negroes to DANIEL and NANCY ANN
CARLTON which were, upon their deaths, to pass on tho their children:
WILLIAM CARLTON, HENRY CARLTON, MARGARET MARCOM,
and NANCY LEIGH (wife of Richard Standford Leigh). There is also
mention of a grandson, JOHN CARLTON, and the three sons
of WESLEY CARLTON (could not possibly be the Wesley, son of Thomas
Trice Carlton). He appointed HENRY TRICE, Sr and DANIEL CARLTON
as executors.
NANCY ANN DANIEL CARLTON, wife of DANIEL CARLTON was born 24 July,
1772 in MIDDLESEX CO VA. They
were married on 29 June 1793.
One source on DANIEL says that he was born on 23 Nov 1769 in ESSEX CO
VA and died 22 Mar 1856 in Orange Co NC.
That same source (of which I am skeptical) says that both Daniel and
Leonard were the sons of WILLIAM CARLTON and
ELIZABETH GARRETT of KING AND QUEEN CO VA. WILLIAM died about 4 June
1812.
Here is what I received from an earlier query on another board:
"Hello - Leonard Carlton son of William and Elizabeth Carlton of K&Q
never left K&Q.
Land Tax rolls of K&Q (Microfilm) - Virginia State Library.
Until 1812 - William Carlton was listed as a shoemaker & his
property was 1 mile south of the court house.
In 1810 - William had 4 sons 16-24 & 1 son 10-15. He was over 45 &
wife was 26-44
After his death in 1812 - his widow Elizabeth's dower share was two
tracts of 69.5 acres & 73 acres.
Sons Isaac, John & Thomas received jointly 246 acres and sons
William & Leonard received 100 acres.
They continue on the Land Tax rolls - Elizabeth was last found in
1817. William Jr dies 1826 - In 1840 Leonard Carlton was between
ages of 50-59 & in 1850 he was 56 -
I copied the 1812 will of William Carlton at the VSL = William and
Leonard - whereas I have purchased of Thomas Wyatt 100 acres which I
intend for my sons William and Leonard. Thomas Wyatt (he hopes)
will execute a deed to William and Leonard. The three other sons to
inherit the home tract - which tax records show to be 246 acres.
His son Garrett was dec'd leaving a daughter Elizabeth which her
grandfather left 20L.
So this Leonard cannot be MY LEONARD. But notice, there is no mention
of a DANIEL either.
Perhaps there was a different William Carlton with sons Leonard and
Daniel?
Now Ann, as for your reference to Nannie Nunn Carlton, wife of Daniel
Carlton and mother of Leonard and Daniel Carlton of K&Q CO VA:
Another website has Nannie's dates as 1761-1819 (I cannot vouch for
the accuracy) and an approximate wedding date of 1786. Now, IF, the
information above is correct, neither Nannie's husband Daniel nor her
son Daniel could be the same as MY DANIEL. I don't see any way her son
Leonard could be MY LEONARD.
However, the names are suggestive that these may be popular family
names.
At some point LEONARD and BETSY moved to Jones Co. Georgia. At least
some of his children went with him (though NOT Thomas Trice Carlton).
These descendants spread out all over, to TX, OK, and as far as
Washington State. If anyone has a "Carter Braxton Carlton" in their
line, then he or
she probably traces back to Leonard.
An interesting tid bit. Leonard was sued in JONES CO GA by one of his
granddaughters over Thomas Trice's estate in 1815:
Malinda Jones, by her father and next friend Nathan Jones, seeks to
get her share from the estate of her great-grandfather, Thomas
Trice. In his will, dated 1801, Trice bequeathed to his eighteen
grandchildren his share in the estate of a Barnet Magers
[Magerres], should it be recovered. Malinda Jones's grandfather,
Leonard Catton [Carlton], served as one of Trice's executors and
recovered his share in the Magers estate, valued at $3,894.94,
which he received in slaves. Catton then took possession of the
slaves as the guardian of his five children. The slaves now number
seven, and have yet to be divided among the five children. Nancy
Catton Jones, Malinda's mother, died, leaving Malinda as her only
heir. Now Malinda asserts that as Nancy Catton Jones's only heir,
she is entitled to a one-fifth share of the seven slaves. She asks
that Catton answer her allegations in detail, and that he be
compelled to distribute the slaves and deliver to her one-fifth share.
No result is recorded.
