Carlton Researchers,
We start "ROLL CALL" today. Let us all hear from you whether you are
Carleton, Carlton or Calton. Good Luck in 2007.
Ann Carlton Oppenheimer: Researching John Carlton(ca late 1600's) of
Virginia and all Virginia Carltons - counties include, Essex, King & Queens,
Albemarle and other surrounding counties of that area. My particular line
migrated to Wilkes Co., NC, by 1778; then to TN, AL, AR, & TX. My great
grandfather always stated his Carlton line was related to the Francis Marion
Carlton line, but to date, I have found no proof.
Raymond, I want to first answer your questions. I may have misled you as
to what I obtained in Stephenville, TX.
I was at the Stephenville Museum where the Cowan Cabin (which is actually
part of the Jones Cabin - one of my ancestors) is located and I was browsing
thru a scrapbook in the office of the director. I decided to take digital
pictures of the article, so I can send you the article in jpeg format if you
have that soft ware available. The newspaper article is not dated - the
person did not cut out the date when the article was saved(sniff - sniff).
The article is under the heading of Salute to the Pioneers. It is an
interview with Mrs. R. N. Carlton. Her husband was the son of G. M.
Carlton, son of Francis M. Carlton. Her first name is not mentioned, but
her parents were Mr. & Mrs. George Tabor and she was born in Duffau, TX, 15
Apr 1874. Her father was a druggist there and when about 13 years old the
family moved to Hico, TX. She was teaching in Fairy, Hamilton Co, TX and
purchased her supplies from the Carlton Store in Carlton which G. M. Carlton
owned and managed. There she met her future husband.....they were married
in Stephenville, Erath Co., TX 16 Jun 1896. The Carlton stores were
located in six communities, i.e. Carlton, Hico, Walnut Springs,
Stephenville, Hamilton and Gatesville - operating under the name of G. M.
Carlton Bros. and Co. In 1906, they moved to Stephenville where R. N.
Carlton took over the management of the store. There is much she discusses
about Stephenville. Their children were as follows: Frank Carlton & family
who lived in Kerrville, TX. A daughter, Mrs. C. O. McMillian living
Stephenville and the daughter & husband are "prominent in the civic and
social life of Stephenville." Another son, George, died in 1933.
There is a picture of her in the paper taken by Bax Studio and the home
address of the family was 420 N. Belknap. I didn't know if you had this
information. It looks George Morrow Carlton was a brother to your Benjamin
Hardy Carlton.
Speaking of pictures, the museum and the Genealogy Library at Tarleton State
have tons of pictures, not all of them catalogued, but they are working on
it.
Yes, I would like to see B. H. Carlton's autobiography. Thank you.

Carlton DNA
I have started a Carlton DNA site which has started gathering interest.
Originally, my focus was on all of the Virginia Carlton lines, but now, I
have been approached by some New England Carletons, so we shall see. Let me
know if any of you might be interested. I will set up the Excel spreadsheet
soon to show DNA matches. BTW, all of this is treated with the utmost
Confidentially.
Have a great rest of the week!!!!
