Descendants of Christopher Babbidge
Generation One
1. Christopher1 Babbidge1,1,2,1,2 was baptized on 17 April 1631 in
Totnes, co. Devonshire, England.3,1 He and Agnes Trigg were married on 31
December 1655 in Totnes, co. Devonshire, England.4 He and Hannah Jewett were
married on 5 October 1674 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.5,1,6,7 He
died after 1711 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.3,7
He lived in 1661 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.8 He and Agnes
Trigg immigrated in 1661 to Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts; sailed from
Dartmouth in the ship Nathaniel, John Adams, Master.9,10,7,8,2 He was a
tailor, and had been taught his trade by George Marks in Totness at Salem,
Essex County, Massachusetts.7 He was made a freeman on 3 May 1665 in Salem,
Essex County, Massachusetts.11
He was living in Salem as late as 27 November 1706.1
Agnes Trigg4,3 was baptized on 17 May 1628 in Totnes, co. Devonshire,
England.2,12 She died on 17 November 1667 in Salem, Essex County,
Massachusetts, at age 39.4,7

3. ii. Naomi Babbage13,13,13 was born on 2 October 1661 in Totnes, co.
Devonshire, England.13 She died on 6 October 1692 in Salem, Essex County,
Massachusetts, at age 31.14
4. iii. Ruth Babbidge13,7,13,13 was born on 21 March 1663/64 in Salem,
Essex County, Massachusetts.13,7
5. iv. John Babbidge13,7,13,13 was born on 15 April 1666 in Salem,
Essex County, Massachusetts.13 He died on 13 January 1688 in Salem, Essex
County, Massachusetts, at age 21.15
Hannah Jewett1,1,1 was born on 15 June 1641 in Rowley, Essex County,
Massachusetts.16,1,17 She and John Carleton were married say 1658/59 in
Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.18,19,1,20,21,22 She died after 1707 in
Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.23,1,7
She and John Carleton purchased land on 22 May 1662 in Haverhill, Essex
County, Massachusetts.19 She lived on 27 November 1706 at Salem, Essex
County, Massachusetts.1
Hannah Jewett married, first, John Carlton son of Edward and Ellen Carlton.
They settled in Bradford, Massachusetts, and removed to Haverhill,
Massachusetts, where he died 22 January 1668.
Edward Carlton, father of John, was a freeman of Rowley, Massachusetts in
1642, and had the next year a three acre house lot. He returned with his
family to England, and soon sent his son John Carlton back to settle his
estate in Rowley for him; but John died evidently before he was able to do
so, for in the County Court records is found the following petition relative
to the settlement of the estate of Edward Carlton: "To the Honoured Court
now sitting at Salem this 27 of November, Anno Dom. 1678. The humble request
of Christopher Babbage & Hannah his wife that whereas Mr. Edward Carlton
somtimes of Rowley left an estate in New England when he went out of the
country, part of which (he sending his son John Carlton by virtue of a
letter of Aturney did recieved in his behalf), wee conceiving that there
being some of his estate unreceive by said son, desire this Honoured Court
would appoynt some of our relations, Jeremiah Jewett or Nehemiah Jewett or
both to be administrators to the sayd Mr. Edward Carlton that if anything
may be preserved, it may be fourth-comming to the children of said Hannah
relict of said John Carlton deceased, the only heirs to any such estate (as
we can conceive) , or as authority shall dispose of it & in your soe doing
your servants shall pray."

"Jeremiah Jewett & Nehemiah Jewett have power of administration granted of
the estate of Mr. Edward Carlton deceased, who was formly of Rowley and they
are enjoyned to bring in a true inventory, at ye next court at Ipswich."
In Court at Salem 29:9:1678 "Ateste, Hilliard Verin, Clerk."
She married (2nd) Christopher Babbage son of Roger and Hester Babbage, of
Totnes, England. "Widow Hannah (Jewett) Carlton of Haverhill married 5:8 mo:
1674 Christopher Babbidge son of Roger & Hester Babbidge of Totness,
Devonshire, England." (Essex Antiquarian.)
He came from England in the ship "Nathaniel, John Adams Master" in 1661,
and settled in Salem Massachusetts, (having married in Totnes, Agnes Triggs,
of Totnes, who came with him. She died at Salem, 17 November 1667, leaving
two children, viz., Ruth, born 21 March 1663, and John, born 15 April 1666.)
He was proprietor of common lands in Salem that year, and was made freeman
in 1665. He was a tailor.
Hannah Babbage was dismissed from the church in Rowley to Salem 6 June
1665.
Hannah and her sister Patience Jewett sold a farm to John Gage.
The six known children of Christopher1 Babbidge and Hannah Jewett all
born in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, were as follows:
6. i. Hannah2 Babbidge13,7,13,13 was born on 15 July 1675.13 She died
on 6 May 1698 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 22.7
7. ii. Mary Babbidge13,7,13,13 was born on 1 March 1676/77.13
Her baptism name was Annie Babbidge.7
+ 8. iii. Christopher Babbidge, born 11 November 1678; married Lydia
Marston.
9. iv. Richard Babbidge13,7,13,13 was born on 1 October 1680.13 He
died in March 1681 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.13,15
10. v. Richard Babbage13,13,13 was born on 14 July 1682.13 He died on
1 October 1683 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 1 year, 2
months and 17 days.7
11. vi. Nehemiah Babbidge13,7,13,13 was born on 25 March 1684.13 He
died on 24 December 1685 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 1.7
Generation Two
2. Esther2 Babbage (Christopher1Babbidge)24,24,24 was born on 22
October 1656 in Totnes, co. Devonshire, England.24 She and John Mascall were
married on 6 October 1674 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.25
John Mascall25 died on 4 December 1738 in Salem, Essex County,
Massachusetts.26
The four known children of Esther2 Babbage and John Mascall all born
in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, were as follows:
12. i. John3 Mascall27,27,27 was born on 5 August 1675.27 He and
Elizabeth Bachellor were married on 14 May 1701 in Salem, Essex County,
Massachusetts.28 He died on 1 June 1702 in Salem, Essex County,
Massachusetts, at age 26.26
13. ii. Steephen Mascall27,27,27 was born on 21 May 1677.27 He and
Mary Fretlee (Frettee) were married on 4 October 1705 in Marblehead,
Massachusetts.28
14. iii. Sarah Mascall27,27,27 was born on 20 April 1687.27
15. iv. Mehittabell Mascall15,15,15 was born on 16 January 1694.15
8. Christopher2 Babbidge (Christopher1)13,7,13,13 was born on 11
November 1678 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.13 He and Lydia Marston
were married on 6 December 1706 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.7 He
died in 1755 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.7
Lydia Marston7 died after 1726 in Massachusetts.7
The only known child of Christopher2 Babbidge and Lydia Marston was:
16. i. Captain John3 Babbidge7,7,7 was born on 7 September 1707 in
Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.7 He died on 12 May 1745 in Salem, Essex
County, Massachusetts, at age 37.7
