My Carleton lines runs as follows:
Samuel Edens (ca 1776-1847) m Rebecca Carleton (ca 1775-bef 1840)
(There is controversy over who Rebecca is. Some think she is Rebecca
Chastain.
I have proven to my satisfaction and some very good Edens researchers agree
that she was Rebecca Carleton)
Rebecca's father was William Carleton (ca 1735-bef Sep 1813) m Esther
Brown.
Carleton researchers give William's father as Thomas b ca 1680 in VA d? VA
wife unkown.
Thomas's father is given as William Thomas Carleton b 1634 VA m Pauline
Gant
William's mother was Mary Carleton of the below notation and his father is
unknown.
It is not known if she was married or if Carleton was her maiden name.
On January 2, 1634, at the age of 23, Mary signed to embark aboard the ship
Bonaventure for the purpose of sailing to the New World. In March the ship
sailed. Her destination was the Royal Crown Colony of Jamestown, Virginia.
It is unknown whether Mary was joining her husband in Jamestown, or
whether she was a servant, or maybe even an indentured servant.
Therefore, we do not know if Carlton was her maiden or married name. In either case,
the son she bore, either on the voyage or soon afterwards, had the surname
Carlton, the first American born of our Carleton family
This is not my research. It has come from other Carleton and Edens
researchers.
I am certain of Rebecca and her parents. I would be grateful to know if
there is
further proof of the line back to Mary. The one thing that bothers me is
that it
appears that from Rebecca's father back to the first Carleton of the line,
the sons
were not born before the fathers were in thier 50's. I know this happens,
but in
this case it seems to happen with every generation with the exception of
Rebecca's
parents and their children. They had several who are proven by a will and
one of
Rebecca's brothers married a sister of Samuel Edens.
