Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thanks Ron. I am one of the two cousins that helped Helena Hargrave put
together the information for her book Carleton-Carlton Forebears. It is
good to let others know this information in avaiable on the computer.

According to Carleton-Carlton Forebears, A Genealogy of Some Descendants
of Edward Carleton, Proprietor of Rowley, Mass., 1639/1648/9, With Some
Biographical Notes, Compiled by Helena M. Goodale Hargrave 1970 , revised in
1977.-Edward Carleton was in Rowley, Mass by Oct 20, 1639 when "a second
son was born to Edward and Ellen and named 'Edward'." "In 1639, Edward
Carleton was one of five men chosen 'to order the affairs of the town of
Rowley, Massachusetts."
My John, s/o Edward, was born ca Jan 1637 in England. So, sometime between
Jan 1637 and October 1639, Edward and Ellen immigrated to Massachusetts.
I would be happy to exchange information with others on any of the New
England Carleton-Carlton lines. Always looking for addition information.
My line went to Haverhill and Bradford, Mass. for many years. Then to
Tolland Co., CT., then Windsor Co., VT. (this is where I need some help on
my Asa Carlton and his wife Dorcas Perry). Then Asa's son, James Perry born
1812 in Vermont moved to Minnesota. Any help appreciated.

I am interested in you John Carlton, s/o Thomas and Elizabeth, line. I have
six children of this couple, but nothing on John or his sister Sarah. Could
you help? My line is actually Walter, Edward, John (ca 1638) and Hannah
Jewett Carlton and Edward (b 1684), but thanks to a couple distant cousins
we have traced most of the different lines. We have traced your line but
came to a dead end and could find nothing on your John. We have no dates or

Hello Marcia, I was hoping the list would have Carlton contributors whose
ancestors were in New England.
What dates did your Carlton arrive in America?
Thanks for answering the Roll Call. Look forward to hearing more.

Hi Eugene, thank you for answering the Roll Call.
This is what I have on Silas Carlton and I think he is the father of your
John Carlton.
Silas Carlton is the son of Thomas Carlton and his second wife, Catherine
Livingston and he was born in Wilkes Co., NC.
My cousin and good friend, George H. Carlton who wrote the book I previously
mentioned in the request for Roll Call gives the following information on
Silas.
"Silas probably migrated with his sisters to Jackson Co., AL in the
1830s." There is a pension application dated, 7 Sept 1838) of his widow,
which gives the rest of the story about Silas. The pension states Silas
died of "Brain Fever". He was private in the North Alabama Mounted
Volunteers(did he furnish his own horse?); entered service 8 Sep 1836.
There are several other statements in this pension application and also
states a son, John P. Carlton about two years old. Do you have a copy of
this pension?
Silas Carlton is also mentioned in Thomas Carlton's will of 1837,
Wilkes Co., NC, but was not probated until 1844/45.
As this fits, you and I are distant cousins which I will explain in a later
E-mail.
Let us know how this information works with your research.

Hi Marsha, thanks for answering the Roll Call.
Can anyone help Marsha with the adoption laws of Michigan/Illinois? Was the
adoption in MI or IL?
I do find the name of Gladys Carlton in several Michigan county census
records. Have you researched this area?

Ann,
I have Lindsey Carlton born abt 1765 died abt 1835 in Surry County, NC, as
the son of John Carlton & Agatha Lindsey.
However have not done much research on him. He is one of the early land
owners in the area.
Lindsey was a large land owner in several counties.
He also had a son named Lindsey that married Polly Rutledge in Surry County,
NC 3 7 1822.
A Carlton Cemetery is just a couple of miles from where I live in Yadkin
County, NC.(Formed from Surry in 1850) Many descendants of Lindsey Carlton
are buried there specifically from his son Bloom Carlton b March 3 1802.
Many researchers have overlooked the many Carlton's from this line(John
Carlton & Agatha) that settled in the southern district of Surry County,
NC, now Yadkin. Lindsey line settling on the south Deep Creek & George's son
Moses settling on the north Deep Creek.
Robert Davidson, many years ago did a good bit of research on these
Carlton's but a lot of his research as been distorted.
There is a tremendous amout of land records for the Carlton's in
Wilkes/Surry/Yadkin.

Ronnie, thanks for answering the Roll Call.
I find your Daniel Carlton in the 1850 Orange Co NC Census. Age 80, Farmer,
and b. in North Carolina - those census takers - sometimes right and
sometimes wrong. Living with Daniel is John Carlton - age 41, b. NC and
occupation: Clerk; Anderson Couch, age 21 b. NC and farmer; James Markham,
age 23, b. NC and farmer; Patsy Parrish, age 36, b. NC
Two Households down is a Betsy Carlton, age 50, b. NC and John Boothe, age
6, b. NC.
On Ancestry, there is a One World Tree Record (which should be used as a
road map only) which states Daniel's wife was Nancy Daniel. I don't see
anything that states who Daniel's father was. Daniel and Nancy's children
are listed. Do you have this information?
I noticed in one cemetery "Howerton Baptist Church Cemetery", Essex, VA,
there was a couple by the name of Carlton. He was buried in 1978. Any
research done in that county?
As Essex Co is next to King & Queen Co, I am wondering if your Carlton line
is somehow related to the Carlton line in King & Queen.
What do you know of William?

TGIF Carlton Researchers!!
We all do a fair amount of reading and perusing the Internet for our
genealogy research. For this week, I read the most interesting article
which I plan to use for my "Brick Wall" research.
The "Georgia Genealogical Society Quarterly" Vol. 42, Number 2 has recently
been published. An article entitled "Identifying the Parents of Asenath E.
Northcutt", written by Nathan Mathews. Mr. Mathews is President of the
Georgia Genealogical Society.
He is looking for direct proof on the individual named above and can find
none. His next course of action is thru "indirect proof". His research
tools include mainly the census records, starting with 1830 and 1840 thru
the 1900 census records of Georgia and prepares a logical way of "process by
elimination". He uses the following:
1. Subject's Place of birth,
2. Subject's Maiden Name (sometimes assumed)
3. Naming Patterns of families
4. Burial and residence proximity (sometimes found in County histories)
5. Census profile
6. Tax digest.
See if your library has a copy. It is so simple and concise. I am sure we
all use these tools, but for myself, it is haphazard!. At a later time, I
will share my results on the "Carlton Brick Wall" I will be working on,
using the above 6 suggestions.
Phrases that stand out ----. Found at the internet sight of the Peyton
Family Genealogy Society: "To develop a History out of Tradition and
Accuracy out of Myth."

I have kind of an interesting Carlton. Mine is Rebecca Carleton who married
Samuel Edens, probably in VA and then died in SC around 1836.
A lot of controversy has swirled around Rebecca over the years from
researchers who think she was a Chastain and not Carleton. I have proven, at
least to my
satisfaction, and to that of some other researchers who had come to the same
conclusion, that
she is Rebecca Carleton. Reportedly, though I have not found it, there is a
Bible record of their
marriage. The Bible is supposed to be in the hands of a Carleton family
member, but to date
I have not been able to confirm that.
I have info on Rebecca's line back to the immigrant, but no proof of its
accuracy, so I'm not
going to go into the whole thing right now. Supposedly she descends from a
female Carleton
who gave birth to the first Carleton male in the new colonies of America.
It is not known if
he was born on ship or shortly after landing. It is not known if she was
married or if the
child was illigitimate. I have found a Captain Carleton of a ship in that
time frame, but
have not been able to make a connection.
