William D. Carlson
1928-2003
William Dwight Carlson DVM, 74, of Denton, Texas, former president of the University
of Wyoming, died Oct. 24 at his home.
Bill was born Nov. 5, 1928, in Denver, son of Dwight I. Carlson and Irene M. Gilkison
Carlson. He grew up in Fort Collins, Colo., and attended Washington School, Lincoln
Junior High, and was a 1947 graduate of Fort Collins High. He was a member of the
1945 Fort Collins High State Championship Football Team.
He earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Colorado State University in
1952. He was in private practice in Littleton, Colo., before joining the faculty at CSU.
Bill founded the field of veterinary radiology and radiation biology at CSU after earning
a
Ph.D. in radiology at the University of Colorado Medical School He rejoined the
veterinary faculty at CSU and wrote the original textbook on veterinary radiology. His
portrait hangs in the CSU Glover Gallery.
He served as president of the University of Wyoming from 1968-1979. He finished his
career at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C. before
retiring to Denton.
He was a CASA volunteer and was active in the Rotary Club and Long's Peak Council
Boy Scout leadership, and many other church and community activities.
Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly (Bradshaw) Carlson of Denton; a son,
Dr. Earl Carlson and his wife, Dr. Mary, of Fort Collins; a daughter, Dr. Susan Ward
and husband Virgil of Denton; a sister, Elaine Dobler of Fort Collins; two
granddaughters, Olivia Jeffers and husband Devron, and Amanda Espinoza and
husband Victor; and three great-grandchildren, and a fourth on the way.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Denton.
The Rev. Steven Nilmeier will officiate. The family will receive friends and colleagues
from 3-5 p.m. Friday at the home of Earl and Mary Carlson in Fort Collins.
