Looking to find lost relatives of my grandfather. He had siblings in Kandiyohi MN and kin
left behind in Sweden.
Many exact details about my grandfather are unknown. He was born in Sweden sometime
between 1879 and 1881. He immigrated to America in 1889-1890. (The uncertainty on years
is due to differing information Gustav provided on 1920 and 1930 Federal Census records.)
He lists himself as naturalized in 1900. The story from my father was that Gustav
immigrated to Kandiyohi following siblings who had immigrated before him. Gustav worked
for the railroad in 1920 in Tyler TX and had a two year old son named Alton Lamar Carlson
and wife Lillian Swedine Carlson. In 1930 Gustav appears in Douglas AZ as the owner of a
grocery store. After Gustav's murder in August 1931, Lillian had to be
institutionalized with severe depression from which she never recovered. The story is
someone came from Kandiyohi to get my father and take him back to the Carlsons in
Kandiyohi, but my father had already been sent to live with his mother's relatives in
Georgetown, TX. They were Lamar John Swed!
ine and his sister Belinda Swedine. The only details we know about the Carlsons in
Kandiyohi is that they immigrated before Gustav and they owned a dairy. We're not
sure what part of Sweden my grandfather came from, but the story is he sailed from
Goteburg. We don't know if that's strictly from where he sailed, or if the family
lived there too. My father, Alton Lamar Carlson, passed away suddenly in 1986. He had
never been very talkative about the family history and took most of the details with him
to the grave. Any help with us finding our lost roots is greatly appreciated.
