Dr. Martin Evald Carlson, 94, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 23,
2000, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday
at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gret-chen Diers will officiate.
Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Palmer Cemetery. Visitation will
be from 3 to 7 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5
p.m., Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust. Memorials are
suggested to the family. Dr. Carlson was born on Nov. 5, 1905, in
Saronville to Carl Anton and Clara (Monson) Carlson. He was raised on
the family farm near Saronville. He graduated from Sutton High School
and received his associate of arts at Luther College in 1933, bachelor
of arts from Augustana College in 1938, master of arts from the
University of Northern Colorado in 1947 and doctorate from the
University of Nebraska in 1963. He taught at Clay County from 1924 to
1929 and at Saronville from 1933 to 1936. He was principal at Palmer
from 1938 to 1940 and superintendent at Palmer from 1940 to 1942. He
served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He was an instructor
and coach at Luther College in Wahoo from 1948 to 1955. He married
Blanche Johnson on Sept. 13, 1949, in Marysville, Kan. He
was vice president and dean of Luther College from 1955 to 1962 and
taught social sciences at Kearney State College from 1962 to 1977. He
was a social science curriculum specialist from 1967 to 1969 and general
education curriculum specialist in 1968-69 for the Title 3 Nebraska
State Colleges curriculum development project. He was a member of many
education and historical associations. He was Kiwanian of the Year and
Kiwanis lieutenant governor in 1968. He was chairman of the New Club
Building Nebraska and Iowa in 1971 and 1972. He was a Lutheran lay
preacher, a Bible teacher and sponsor of the Campus Crusade for Christ
International at Kearney State College and sponsored the Young
Democrats at Kearney State. His honors included graduating Summa Cum
Laude at Augustana College and Phi Alpha Theta. He retired from
teaching in 1977 and held Realtor/broker/insurance licenses. He was a
member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife; a son,
Dale Carlson of Grand Island; a stepson, Roger Mueller of Grand Island;
and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by two brothers and
one sister.

Pearl Evangeline Small, 91, of Central City, died Friday, March 3, 2000,
at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services will be
at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central
City. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Burial will be in
the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7
p.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Merrick
Manor or the Merrick Foundation. Mrs. Small was born June 13, 1908 to
John and Amanda (CARLSON) Larson in Hordville. She attended the rural
Hamilton County School. She married Harold Benton Small on Feb. 4, 1934
in Merrick County. They farmed on Prairie Island for 27 years. They
moved to Central City in 1960 and Mrs. Small worked
at the Dairy Queen. They both retired in the mid-1970s and moved to
Merrick Manor in 1996. Her husband died on Sept. 13, 1996. Mrs. Small
was a volunteer at Community Care in Central City and at The Hospital
Auxiliary Thrift Shop for many years. She was a member of the Rebekah
Lodge, was awarded the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and the
Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award. Survivors include one brother, Clarence
Larson of Greeley, Colo. In addition to her husband, she was
preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Elmer, and Harold
Larson; and one sister, Ruby Larson.

Nettie E. Carlson, 98, of Ravenna died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the
Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday
at the United Methodist Church in Ravenna. The Revs. Mark Cadenbach and
Todd Swift will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in
Gibbon. Memorials are suggested to the Ravenna Emergency Unit.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements. Mrs.
Carlson was born Dec. 24, 1901, to Herman and Louise (Puchert) Pope on
a farm north of Shelton. She married LaVergne Carlson on Jan. 25, 1928.
The couple lived on the Carlson family farm south of Ravenna until the
early 1970s when they retired to Ravenna. She took pride in her home
and garden. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Survivors
include two sons, Glenn of Grass Valley, Calif., and Myron "Jack" of
Dixon, Ill.; two daughters, Vernetta (Mrs. Robert)
Svanda of Ravenna and Shirley Swift of Omaha; 11
grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her husband on May 10, 1974, two brothers and three sisters.
