Shirley V. Mitchell, 86, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Central Vermont Medical Center
in Berlin.
Born on Nov. 20, 1921, in Claremont, N.H., she was the daughter of Ernest and Abbie E.
(Persons) Richotte. She attended schools in Shrewsbury, Mass.On May 28, 1938, she married
Elmer "Al" August Carlson. They lived in Shrewsbury and Worcester, Mass. They
were later divorced. In 1956, she married Donald Mitchell and they made their home in
Shrewsbury. They were later divorced.
In earlier years, she was a seamstress and later worked for the Lawrence Candle Company in
Northboro, Mass. For 27 years until her retirement, she worked in assembly for the Electro
Fiber Optics Company of Marlborough, Mass.
Shirley was a volunteer at the Central Vermont Medical Center's Bene-Fit Shop in
Barre. She enjoyed both vegetable and flower gardening and in earlier years, family
camping, fishing, sewing and square dancing.
Survivors include her daughters, Gail Kissell and her husband, Gerald of Sandwich, Mass.,
and Linda Gaffney and her companion, Frank Roya of Williamstown; her son, Richard Carlson
and his companion, Estelle Hebert of Berlin; four grandchildren, Steven, Tracy, Chad, and
Laura; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanne Oliver of Rocky Hill, Conn., and
Virginia Stats of Edwards, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.Besides her parents,
she was predeceased by her former husbands, Al Carlson and Donald Mitchell; a grandson,
David Kissell; two brothers, Wilfred Richotte and Raymond Richotte; and a sister, Arlene
Oliver.
Funeral service Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, in the East Calais Union Church. Interment in the
Fair View Cemetery in East Calais.
