PASSED AWAY
John PETERSON, pioneer of the Chillicothe neighborhood and one of the
prominent men of his locality died at the Ottumwa hospital where he had been
receiving treatment, Wednesday morning, July 9, at the ripe age of 80 years.
He was born in Sweden December 8, 1845 and came to the United States with
his parents in 1860. They lived for a short time in Brocton, N. Y. and for
another brief period in Illinois, afterward moving to this county where he
has since lived, for more than half a century. He was married to Miss
Hannah CARLSON February 10, 1869. His wife and eight children survive. The
children are: Alex of Ottumwa, Chas., F. W. and Alfred of Chillicothe, Mrs.
E. A. GUSTASON of Ottumwa, Mrs. Gust BURGASON and Mrs. Clarence JOHNSON of
near Munterville, and Mrs. Alice WANSTEDT who has been living with her
parents. Mr. PETERSON was a very successful farmer and a splendid citizen
and always active in community affairs. He raised a fine family and in his
death the community loses a grand old pioneer citizen. Funeral services
were held at the home at 2 p.m. last Friday afternoon and at the Munterville
church at 2:30; Rev. P. O. BERSELL officiating. Interment was made in the
Munterville cemetery.
