kacarlson,
I also have many relatives who ended up in Jamestown, New York, and it is an easy place to
research our ancestors. The Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center has many of their
church records (which tell where they came from, etc. if they actually joined the church
and even if they didn't join, you can find baptism, confirmation, marriage and funeral
records in those church records.) The Swenson Center also has several newspapers on
microfilm for Jamestown (which are good for obituaries and more, and have helped me
greatly. Yes, they are in Swedish but you can pick out names and locations and dates,
etc.
Swenson Center records are not online but they have a website.

I have used cemetary records (Lake View Cemetary) to get much more information. Early ones
have been microfilmed. I have used marriage applications (on microfilm) to learn more
about the people. (These applications are far more helpful than a marriage certificate.)
I have ordered obituaries from this source and the obits in the Jamestown newspapers are
very detailed. You do need to provide them with an exact date of death or at least a
month/year of death, and there is a small fee.

I have also found great amounts of information from the federal censuses and you are lucky
because New York State also had state censuses in such years as 1892, 1905, 1915, and
1925, for example.
Here is a maybe for your Malcom. I don't know if he is yours, however.

The 1900 census provides a month and year of birth. Perhaps that extra information will
help find your people. Censuses (at least the federal ones from 1900-1930) provide a year
of immigration too.
You're lucky they settled in Jamestown. The side of my family which settled there has
been the easiest branch of my family to research.
