Drew, have we ever corresponded before? I haven't looked at my Carlson
line genealogy in a couple of years, but my grandfather was Charles A.
Carlson, and was b. in August 1866. The family came to the US in 1867,
according to the 1910 census. The only immigration listing I've found
that would fit is a Carl Carlson, b. 1867, who immigrated May 1868 as an
infant from Liverpool on the ship named "City of New York." My Carl
Carlson also had a brother John, b. 1867 in Sweden.
This family is a mystery. I can't find any Charles/Charlie Carlson in
MN who matches, yet my Charles Andrew Carlson met Ida Olivia Anderson in
Meeker Co., MN. Can't find any marriage record for them in either MN or
IL, where they moved after they married in 1894. They moved to Chicago
and raised their family there. He was a stone mason. The 1910 census
says they married in 1892, but a 1906 church membership record lists
them as married in 1894. I've found a Carl Adolf Carlson marrying an
Ida O. Anderson in 1893 in Chicago, but supposedly my Charlie's middle
name was Andrew, not Adolf. Also, the bride is listed a being 9 years
younger than my Ida was, so doubt that this record is them. I believe
they married in Meeker Co., MN, where Ida was living. She immigrated in
1888, to join two brothers and a sister who had immigrated earlier.
Parents remained in Sweden. To further complicate things, Charlie
changed his surname to Melin sometime between Jan 1895 and Feb 1897.
(It could be he also changed his middle name to Andrew at that time.)
He supposedly was lost at sea while visiting California in 1918, having
gone there to look for work. His wife and children remained in
Chicago. I've never found a death record. I'm beginning to wonder if
he just didn't head to California and desert his family, having someone
report back that he'd died. It's a total mystery. If anything above
fits with anything you have, please let me know. Thanks!
Linda
