LIBERTY TOWNSHIP - Services will be held Monday, March 23, at 1 p.m., with calling hours
at noon, at the Tod Homestead Cemetery Chapel, for Dr. Barry N. Carlson, 68, who passed
away on March 18, 2015.
Barry was born March 25, 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) the son of Dr.
Randall E. Carlson and Anna Allene "Toni" (Nold) Carlson.
Barry graduated from The Rayen School, Youngstown, Ohio in 1964.
After high school, he attended Ohio University, Athens, Ohio,majoring in Marine Biology.
After college, Barry joined the Army. He served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970.
While in the Army, he served as an infantry fire crewman and a medic.
He was a member of the 198th Army Infantry: Americal Division.
Barry was injured and was honorably discharged.
His accomplishments during his service included being awarded two Purple Hearts, The
National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam
Campaign Medal W/60 Devices, Expert Badge M 16 W/Rifle Bar, O/S Bar W/Rifle and No. 1
Sharpshooter Badge M 14 W/Rifle Bar.
Barry was very proud of his service to his country.
After his discharge and recovery, Barry came home to the north side.
While training in the family practice, Carlson Health Systems, formerly Carlson
Sanitorium, established in the late 1890s by his grandfather and was the first hospital in
Youngstown, Barry attended Easton College, where he received his certifications for
Chiropractic Medicine. Barry practiced and believed in holistic healing, and retired from
Carlson Health Systems.
Barry completed Peace Officer training and worked for the Liberty Police Department.
Barry enjoyed many hobbies including building model airplanes and replica cars. He was a
member of the Norsemen, Rotary and Y.C.C., where he worked as a tennis pro.
His greatest love was fishing and boating on Lake Erie.
One of his proudest moments was qualifying for the Jr. Olympics at the age of nine for his
swimming ability.
Barry leaves behind his wife and best friend, Maryann (Perrone) Carlson, whom he married
in 1998.
Barry also leaves five children, Mrs. Kacie Beck (Joel), Mrs. Erika Turner (Jason), Ms.
Emily Carlson, Mr. David Ensor and Ms. Calli Ensor.
Barry will be missed by his sister, Ms. Cassandra (Carlson) Sniderman; his former wife,
Sally Tod Dutton; and many nieces, nephews, friends and patients.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Randall and Toni Carlson; his brother, Randy
Carlson; and an infant sister, Mary.
