I've run into a roadblock is tracing down my grandfather Jacob F. Carlson's
parents' ancestry in Denmark. A Danish emigration record dated April 4, 1872
indicates his father Hans Carlsen (age 29), his mother Ane Carlsen (very likely not her
maiden surname), and my grandfather Jacob (age about 6 months) left Denmark for the United
States (for Chicago, Illinois). Their last residence in Denmark was in Fredericia
(Fredericia parish) in Vejle County. I am essentially certain that information is for my
family. My plan was to find Jacob's birth record and their marriage record and to
proceed from there if I learned anything. The problem is I haven't found the
information in Danish church records for Fredericia or in the 1870 census for that area.
The frustrating part is that Danish records do not seem to be organized in a way that
permits key word searches, and the
Familysearch.org and
Ancestry.com databases don't
seem to have obviously relevant information. This makes it hard to!
expand the search, based on what I know to do. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to
proceed? I would appreciate any kind of help.
