Roy S. Carlson, age 92,
of Edinboro, Pa.
died Sunday, September 18, 2011
at the Edinboro He was born on May 28, 1919 in Erie, Pa., the only son of the late Simon
A. Carlson and Evelina Lofgren Carlson. He grew up in Erie until the family moved to
McLane when he was a teenager. He went to the McLane School and later graduated from
Edinboro High School. During most of World War II he worked 16 hour days 7 days a week as
a welder at the ship yard in Erie building ships for the war effort. Roy was one of only
two welders who was certified to weld certain specialized pipes on the ship. Towards the
end of the war he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked at a small garage in North
East, Pa. and Britton's in Kearsarge and went on to be the founder and owner of Roy S.
Carlson Garage on Route 99 north of Edinboro. Roy was well-known to be able to fix any
car, truck, tractor, lawnmower, and even an airplane engine. He was highly skilled in
working with a blowtorch and welder. He designed built his own quite large outdoor furnace
that he used to heat hi!
s home for many years. Roy was a member of the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department and was
instrumental in the planning and construction of the current Fire Hall. He served on the
Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Edinboro which later became Marine Bank.
He was also President of the bank. When Marine Bank became PNC Bank he continued on the
Advisory Board. His service to the local bank spanned 25 years. Roy was a member of the
Masons Oasis Lodge #416 and served as a Past Master. Roy loved airplanes and flying. When
he built his home on Crane Road he also built his own airport with two grass runways. He
earned his Private Pilot's License with Instrument Rating. Being a man with great
mechanical abilities he became an FAA Certified Mechanic doing annual inspections and
repairs on private aircraft. Roy was well-known as a hard-working man with great
determination and dedication often working seven days a week. He lived a simple lifestyle
and was very frugal. In a!
ddition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Dennis R.
Carlson, on May 24, 2011. Dennis worked in the garage with his father for well over 50
years. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Carlson Campazzi, Ed.D., of West
Palm Beach, Fla. on February 3, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hardman
Carlson, of Edinboro, his daughter, Jan Zeart and her husband, John, of Edinboro. Four
grandchildren, Clare "Maggi" Paine of Jefferson, Ohio, Brent Carlson and his
wife, Amelia, of Bolivar Tenn., Melanie Carlson, and Jeffery Carlson both of Edinboro and
three great-grandchildren of Jefferson, Ohio and one nephew of West Palm Beach, Fla. He is
also survived by his close friend, Marie Yurcak, of Edinboro. Visitors may be received at
