YOUNGSTOWN - A memorial service will be held Monday, March 14, at 8 p.m. at the
Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Dr. John Paul Carlson Jr., 64, of who
died Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at his home.
John was born March 31, 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio the son of Dr. John Paul and Marie
Chamar Carlson.
After Poland High School, John served in the U.S. Navy and later attended Case Western
Reserve University.
He later received his professional accreditation from the Carlson Sanitarium and Institute
which was founded by his grandfather in 1899, and had served as Youngstown's first
hospital. Carlson Sanitarium later became Carlson Health Systems but remained at its
original location on Youngstown's Northside. Dr. Carlson became the 3rd generation
practitioner at his family's practice working as a physiotherapist until his
retirement in 2004, when the practice celebrated its 105th anniversary of service to the
area.
Dr. Carlson who always referred to himself as a lifelong Northside boy, enjoyed boating
and watching sunsets on Lake Milton and was a member of the Lake Milton American Legion
and the Fraternal Order of the Moose. He was also a member of the Boardman Baptist
Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Kellie M. Carlson Pope and her husband, Paul A. Pope II of
Newton Falls, Ohio; two grandchildren, Paul A. Pope III and Nicole M. Pope; a
great-granddaughter, Riley N. Pope; his cousin, Dr. Barry N. (Mary Ann) Carlson of
Youngstown, whom he practiced with; his former wife, Majorie Carlson-Hurst of Canton; and
a sister, Christine Kilbane of Boardman, Ohio.
Friends may call from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Monday, March 14, at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral
Home, Austintown Chapel.
