Mildred L. Carlson, age 94,
passed away peacefully, on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at her home with her beloved
husband, Don, and daughter, Ann, at her side. The daughter of the late William and Harriet
May, Mildred was born in Cleveland. Her mother died giving birth to her and her twin
sister, Alberta, so she was raised by her father and his relatives. She worked her way
through high school and then earned a degree in education from Bowling Green University,
at a time when obtaining a college degree was unusual for a woman. She taught first grade
in several Ohio schools until she married Don in 1943. Mildred and Don moved to Davis
Monson Field, an Army Air Force base in Arizona. Following the war, they lived briefly in
Chicago before moving to Erie. After raising her family, Mildred taught first grade at
Erie Day School. She found great joy in teaching children to read. She also enjoyed
visiting with family and friends, traveling, ceramics, and music. Mildred and Don were
long time members of St. G!
eorge Parish. She was a member of the Rosary Society at St. George for many years. With
Don, she served for 25 years as a member of a team from St. George who volunteered at the
Emmaus Soup Kitchen. Everyone who met her recognized that she was a very sweet and caring
lady. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Evelyn and Alberta,
and a son, William. She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Donald Carlson;
two daughters, Mary Lou (Verne Perry) and Ann St. John (Richard); two sons, Jack
(Jacqueline) and Mark; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Sarah and Elizabeth Carlson, Kathleen
St. John, and Sergei and Valentina Perry; and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited
to call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, LLP, 1595
West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard and are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on
Monday at 10 a.m. at St. George Church, 5145 Peach Street. Interment will follow at Gate
of Heaven Cemete!
ry. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 218 Eas
t 11th St., Erie, PA 16503.
