This is in reply to lcdawson36’s Apr. 24, 2000, posting to the RootsWeb
Rockland Co., NY, Message Board titled, “Carlough connection.”
I believe your husband’s great-grandfather Edgar or Edward CARLOUGH to be
the son of Henry CARLOUGH (1812 – 1896) and his wife Phoebe (1814 – 1897)
of New York City, and grandson of John N. CARLOUGH (1786 – 1852) and his
wife Catherine FREDERICK (1788 – 1865) or Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY. Henry
and Phoebe are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Rockland Co., NY. Re:

Note that niece “Linda” OSBORN, age 18, was living in Henry and Phoebe’s
household at the time of the 1880 census. I believe this individual to be
Mary Malinda OSBORN, daughter of Jacob OSBORN (b. 1827) and Catherine
CARLOUGH (ca. 1819 – Dec. 4, 1870) of Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY. I have
also located Malinda and her family on the 1860 and 1870 censuses for
Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY. Her grandmother Catherine was also listed with
her family on the 1860 census. Her grandparents’ family, including her
mother, can also be found on the 1850 census for Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY.
Also note that the family of James J. CARLOUGH and his wife Rachel STRAUT
was living next to the family of John N. CARLOUGH at the time of the 1850
census, indicating that James was very likely also a son of John N.
CARLOUGH and Catherine FREDERICK. James and Rachel are buried in the
Airmount Cemetery, Suffern, Rockland Co., NY. Re: Find A Grave (
http://www.findagrave.com), memorials for James J. CARLOUGH and Rachel
STRAUT CARLOUGH.
The “Edward” CARLOUGH listed as a “carman” on the following census was
probably your husband’s great-grandfather: 1870 United States Federal
Census, 9th Wad, 16 E D, New York City, New York Co., NY, pg. 34,
enumerated June 28, 1870, dwelling 112, family 274.
However, “Edgar” CARLOUGH, fitting the same description, appears on the
following census with his parents.
1850 United States Federal Census, Ward 9, New York City, New York Co., NY,
pg. 202 (or 403 ?), enumerated July 27, 1850, dwelling 229, family 461.
1860 United States Federal Census, Ward 9, New York City, New York Co., NY,
pg. 549, enumerated July 1, 1880, dwelling 620, family 1489, with surname
listed as "Carlow".
I have not yet been able to locate Henry and Phoebe’s family on the 1870
census.
John N. CARLOUGH appears with his family on the following census: 1850
United States Federal Census, Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY, sheet 369,
enumerated Sept. 28, 1850, dwelling 314, family 317.
As mentioned above, John’s widow Catherine appears on the following census
with their daughter Catherine’s family: 1860 United States Federal Census,
Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY, pg. 248, enumerated Aug. 11, 1860, dwelling 1798,
family 1798.
Further information about John and Catherine comes from the following
source: SMITH, Robert (hawkridge(a)worldnet.att.net), Internet, e-mail, Feb.
21, 2007; info. fm. record #3651 at the New Jersey Gen. Soc. Collection at
Alexander Library at Rutgers University.
Any additional information that you may wish to provide with regard to your
branch of the CARLOUGH family would be greatly appreciated.
