Seeking ancestry of James CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1892, NJ, who moved to Alaska, where he married
an Athapaskan Indian girl named Jessie, b. Nov. 22, 1898, and had the following children:
1. James "Jim" CARLOUGH, b. Jan. 31, 1914, AK; m. Minnie YAKNAK; d. Aug. 1966.
Minnie b. Jan. 19, 1922, AK; d. Sept. 1977, probably AK; bd. Port Graham Cemetery, Port
Graham, Kenai Peninsula Borough, AK. This was possibly a second marriage for Minnie as
stepdaughter Dorothy CARLOUGH (1936 - 2009) was living in James's household at the
time of the 1940 census.
2. Patrick "Pat" CARLOUGH, b. 1918 - 1919, AK.
3. William CARLOUGH, b. 1920, AK.
4. Elsie CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1924, AK.
5. Louise CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1925, AK.
6. Howard CARLOUGH, b. 1930 - 1931, AK; crab fisherman; m. Alyce OLLESTAD, Dec. 18, 1954;
living in Tumwater, Thurston Co., WA, 2004. Alyce, d/o Tollak OLLESTAD and Lucille, b.
May 16, 1920, Seldovia, AK; crab fisher woman; d. Oct. 21, 2004, probably WA. Alyce lived
in Seldovia, AK, 1920 - 1961; Dutch Harbor, Aleutians West, Alaska; and Snohomish,
Snohomish Co., WA. This was probably Alyce's second marriage as her obituary mentions
children surnamed MONSON.
7. Joseph S. CARLOUGH, Sr., b. 1933-1934; m. #1 Mae; m. #2 Barbara. Joseph, Mae, and
Barbara were all listed as surviving family members when Joseph and Mae's son Joseph
S. "Little John" CARLOUGH, Jr. was killed in an automobile accident, Aug. 17,
2000.
James and his family were living in Seldovia, AK, in 1930. The 1930 census states that
both of his parents were born in New Jersey. James died prior to Feb. 9, 1940, probably
AK. His widow and children were living in what appears to be Porttaik Village (Port
Graham ?), near Seldovia, at the time of the 1940 census.
Jessie remarried to a man named BARNHART. She died in June of 1979 and is buried in the
Seldovia City Cemetery, Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
