Welcome to the new CARLOUGH mailing list! We presently have a total of 10 subscribers to

I have received one reply so far to my query about the pronunciation of the surname
CARLOUGH, with that subscriber stating, "I'm not an authority, but my father
pronounced it Car-low."
It appears that most, if not all, of the CARLOUGHs from the Bergen Co., NJ, and Rockland
Co., NY, area are descended from Coenraad/Conrad GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK (s/o Hans
GERLACH), b. 1660, Heidelberg, Germany, who m. Margrite Ottilia STIKRAAD, ca. 1693, and d.
ca. 1712, NJ or NY. Conrad was one of three GERLACH brothers known to have migrated to
America during the first half of the 18th century. I have not yet done a great deal of
research with regard to the CARLOUGH family. What information I have gathered to-date can
be found in the following report which appears on my home page:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/GENE18-...
. I should be updating this report within the next couple of days, as soon as I finish
inputting some new information which I recently received.
Conrad's brother Johann Christian GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK migrated to the
Schoharie-Mohawk Valley of NY. Many of his descendants used the spelling GARLOCK. I have
found most GARLOCKs to be living in the northeastern portion of the United States, in such
states as NY and MI. I have not yet done a great deal of research with regard to the
GARLOCK family. There is also possibly one branch of GARLICKs descended from these
GARLOCKs. Most GARLICKs, however, are not related to this family.
Conrad and Johann Christian's brother David migrated to VA. Most of his descendants
used the spelling CARLOCK, but branches arose using the alternative spellings of CARELOCK,
CEARLOCK, CURLOCK, and possibly KARLOCK. (My maiden name is CEARLOCK, pronounced like
"CARELOCK.") A large number of CARLOCKs migrated to IL, but have since spread
out all over the United States. The CARELOCK branch originated in NC, but also includes a
branch in AR. Some black families, found primarily in NC, also adopted the surname
CARELOCK. There are two CEARLOCK branches. My branch, the larger of the two, can be
found primarily in the area around Fayette Co., IL. The second branch can be found
primarily in the area around Stephens Co., OK. There are two small CURLOCK branches, one
from each of the CEARLOCK branches. One can be found primarily in the area around
Jefferson Co., IL, and the other can be found primarily in the area around Beckham Co.,
OK. There is at least one very small bra!
nch of KARLOCKs that I believe are probably descended from the Illinois CARLOCKs. There
are other KARLOCKs found in other areas such as PA for whom I have not yet determined
their ancestry. There are also three small CURLOCK branches found in Canada. I have not
yet determined the ancestry of the CURLOCKs found in Estevan, Saskatchewan. The branch in
Edmonton, Alberta, are most likely not related to our family, with their surname
originally spelled KURYLUK. The branch found in New Brunswick are apparently of English
origin.
In additiion to CARLOUGH descendants, Conrad also had descendants who used the spelling
"CARLOCK," including branches that migrated to Licking Co., OH, and Jennings
Co., IN. It is also very probable that the CARLOWs who lived near the CARLOUGHs are also
descended from Conrad.
Some of the early members of our family used the original German spelling of
"GERLACH." I do not yet know if any branches of our family kept that spelling.
The vast majority of GERLACHs in the United States today appear to be descended from other
individuals named GERLACH who migrated to America.
I have a copy of the hard-to-find book "History of the Carlock Family," by
Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. This book primarily deals with the CARLOCK family, but also
includes some limited information on other branches such as the GARLOCKs and CARLOUGHs.

There is also a RootsWeb CARLOUGH Message Board which has been in existance for quite some
time. Any new postings to that list should also automatically post to our mailing list.
