I received the following additional response today to my query about the
pronunciation of the surname CARLOUGH:
"You misunderstood my response. Carlough is pronounced the same as you had
suggested. My stating 'furlough' was reference to the last part of the name
i.e.. Carlough / (fur) 'lough', the 'lough' bring pronounced like
'low'."

Subject: Re: Pronunciation of the surname CARLOUGH
So far, I have received the following three responses to my query
about
the pronunciation of the surname CARLOUGH.
1. "I'm not an authority, but my father pronounced it Car-low."
2. "My grandmother and great aunt were "Carloughs". It was pronounced:
CAR LOW."
3. "You pronounce the name like 'furlough.' Our family settled in the
Ramapo valley in 1709 and had migrated from Baden Germany during the
Palatine Revolution. Some information may be obtained by purchasing a book
'The History of Mahwah' (New Jersey) where our family has been documented."
Apparently there are at least two variations in the way the surname is
pronounced.
In both variations, the accent appears to be on the first
syllable, and the second syllable appears to be pronounced like the word
"low." However, the first two responses pronounced the first syllable like
the word "car," and the third response pronounced the first syllable with an
"ur" sound instead of an "ar" sound.
