This is a follow-up to my Sept. 23, 2012, posting titled "Sorting out the various
Cornelius CARLICKs, CARLOCKs, and CARLOUGHs," a portion of which reads as follows:
"Cornelius E. CARLOCK, b. Feb. 1837, NY; d. 1905 - 1910, probably NY; Civil War
veteran, __ 37 NJ Infantry; shoemaker; residence Clarkstown, Rockland Co., NY, m. ca. 1860
Hester Abigail "Abigail" (1841 - 1918). I have not yet been able to connect
Cornelius to the rest of the family tree, but records suggest that both of his parents
were born in NY."
I have located Cornelius, age 12, on the 1850 census for Ramapo, Rockland Co., NY, with
his surname listed as "CARLOW," living in the household of Aron D. ACKERMAN, age
68, b. NY, and Caroline ACKERMAN, age 62, b. NY. Were Aron and Caroline his maternal
grandparents? If so, then we can identify the maiden name of his mother as ACKERMAN. The
"CARLOW" spelling on the census also presents the possibility that
Cornelius's father could have spelled his surname as "CARLOUGH" or
"CARLOW"
