Message Board Post:
Greetings, Carlon "cousins", especially posters in this thread, mcguan_1,
jcbeans and carlonlaw: I am descended from Hugh Carlon (1805-1868, Grundy Co., IL)
through his daughter Ellen Theresa Carlon (1853-1936). After her brother Thomas J. Carlon
moved to Pigeon Grove Township near Rankin, IL, Ellen joined him to keep house. In 1878
Ellen married my great grandfather John Newman (1850-1937) who was the son of an "old
settler" of Norman Township, Grundy Co., IL., John A. Newman (1816-1900).
Ellen T. Carlon and John Newman settled in Pigeon Grove Township and generated
"hundreds" of descendents. (I have early 20th century plat maps showing their
farm near or adjacent to that of Phillip Carlon, James Carlon, Thomas Carlon, and Dennis
Murray, the father of Anne Murray, spouse of Albert P. Carlon.)
There were strong family connections between the Carlon's and the Newman's in both
Grundy County and the Rankin area and also with another family mentioned in this thread,
the McGuan's of Grundy Co, IL. A daughter of Hugh Carlon, Christina, married Peter
McGuan.
This very weekend, Sunday, August 3, 2008, we are holding the 68th annual Newman-Carlon
Family Weekend in Rankin, IL. (I am the coordinator this year and you are welcome to
contact me at jwnewman(a)ameritech.net for further info.)
We also have family connections with the other Carlon branch outlined in this thread:
Phillip Carlon>James L Carlon>Albert Carlon>thru succeeding generations. Like
mcguan_1, I have struggled to link Hugh Carlon in Grundy and Phillip Carlon in Rankin.
Absent any concrete proof, I believe they are brothers, or perhaps first cousins, who
lived on neighboring farms in Grundy Co, before Phillip came to Rankin. Intriguingly, in
the 1870 census Hugh's widow Christiana lives in the farm adjacent to Phillip, and
they are both listed in the census with the last name, Carolan, that occasionally-seen
variant of Carlon.
For our McGuan connection, I have two photos taken in Grundy Co which appear to date to
about 1900-1910. Fortunately, they are well-captioned and include Peter and Christina
Carlon McGuan and their children Stella, Ed and Allie (George Alphonsus). Also included
are some of Christina's siblings, Bridget Carlon Ruddy, Catherine Carlon and Hugh
Carlon. The photo is marked as having been taken by another sibling, Nancy Carlon, a twin
to Hugh. Also included is Bridget's daughter Ethel and a gentleman named Mike Allen.
Bridget moved to the Rankin area and married Thomas Ruddy. The photos were located in
family files in Rankin and perhaps they were an update from siblings and cousins in Grundy
to those in Rankin.
I would be delighted to share further information. Joe Newman.
