According to the book "Annals of Tazewell County, Virginia, From 1800 to 1922,"
Vol. I, by John Newton HARMAN, Sr., published 1922, by W. C. Hill Printing Company of
Richmond, VA, page 20, "In ... 1753, a road was ordered from Samuel Stalnaker's
on Holston River, to James Davis', with these workers: ..., Frederick Garlock, David,
George and Conrad Carlock, Frederick Stern, ..."
I believe this may be evidence that David CARLOCK who was later found in Mecklenburg Co.,
NC, and Warren Co., KY, was a son of Frederick (s/o David). Furthermore, from the listing
of the names it appears that David may have been older than his brother George.
Frederick's father David, believed to have been born in 1674, to have married in 1714,
and to have died in 1763, would most likely have been too old in 1763 to have worked on
the construction of a road. Since Frederick is believed to have been born in 1720 and his
son George is believed to have been born in 1740, both David and George were probably
young teenagers, around 13 or 14 years old, at the time of the construction of the road.
If David was indeed older than George, I would estimate his birthdate to have been ca.
1739.
Another source for this same information is the book "Kegley's Virginia
Frontier," by F. B. KEGLEY, published 1938, by The Southwest Virginia Historical
Society, page 118.

Subject: Family of David Carlock of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY
This is in reply to the series of messages posted to the CARLOCK list earlier
today by Katheryn HADDAD on the topic of the CARLOCK family in Mecklenburg
Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY, all of which can be accessed through the following
site:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CARLOCK/2003-04 .
I have not
yet had a chance to thoroughly analyze the information posted by Katheryn,
but did want to make one minor correction. The father of Rachel LANDERS,
wife of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK was Henry LANDERS, not John LANDERS.
Rachel did have a brother named John LANDERS who married Mary SATTERFIELD,
Sept. 30, 1805, Warren Co., KY. Rachel's father Henry LANDERS is believed
to have died in Warren Co., KY, ca. 1800 - 1801. For further information
on this family, see the following report which appears on my homepage:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/GENE11-...
. Within that report, see Generation No. 10, person 514 Henry LANDIS/LANDERS,
person 515 Catherine "Cati" probably GOODNIGHT, and their 13 children.
I
do agree with Katheryn's assessment that this David CARLOCK is the most
likely candidate for the father of my direct ancestor George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK,
b. ca. 1779, NC. Another possible candidate for George's father is the
Henry CARLOCK who was in Rutherford Co., NC, and Campbell Co., TN. I have
the following notes in my database with regard to Henry:
"Mecklenburg Co.,
NC, court minutes, Aug. 4, 1787, "Kerlock & the Landess vs. Joseph Rogers",
say that Henry KERLOCK was awarded money "for the orphans of Christopher
Landess, deceased, viz Jacob, Felix and Elizabeth". Furthermore, the 1790
federal census for Morgan District, Rutherford Co., NC, shows a listing
for a Henry CURLOCK, with 3 free white males under 16, and 5 free white
females. Assuming that 2 of the males are Jacob and Felix LANDESS, 1 of
the females was his wife, and 1 was Elizabeth LANDESS, this leaves 1 additional
male under age 16 and 3 additional females living in the household.
This
compiler believes that both this Henry CURLOCK/KERLOCK and the David CARLOCK
who was in Mecklenburg Co., NC, in 1803, and Warren Co., KY, in 1810, are
both possible fathers of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC.
George m. Rachel LANDERS, granddaughter of the above-mentioned Christopher
LANDESS. Further research is needed to determine if Henry or his wife
was somehow biologically related to Christopher LANDESS or his wife. The
surnames of both of the wives are unknown to this compiler at this time.
Henry
probably migrated to the Powell River Valley of Campbell Co., TN. The
first deed recorded in Campbell Co., TN, was from a Thomas CAMPBELL to
a Henry CARLOCK for 500 acres. Households for both a Joseph and a James
CARLOCK appear in the 1830 census for Campbell Co., TN. Also, a Joseph
CARLOCK was elected both Collector of Public Revenue and Sherriff, Dec.
12, 1826, Campbell Co., TN. Furthermore, the Barbara CARLOCK, d/o Henry
and Sally CARLOCK, b. 31 Jan. 1805, in the neighboring county of Claiborne
Co., TN, was probably this Henry's daughter.
If Joseph was Henry's son,
this could strengthen the argument for the above-mentioned David CARLOCK
being the father of George W. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, instead of Henry.
However, there is also a Joseph CARLOCK (s/o Lemuel, Hanchrist, David,
according to Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book) who roughly fits the description
of this Joseph. Furthermore, according to the book "History of the Carlock
Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, Joseph's father Lemuel also had
a son named John who migrated to Allen Co., KY, and had descendants who,
like the above-mentioned George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, lived
in both Warren Co., KY, and Fayette Co., IL. Some of John's descendants,
found in Texas and Oklahoma, also used the spelling 'CEARLOCK' for their
surname. It is also possible that Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book may contain
errors regarding the relationships between Lemuel, Joseph, and John. Additional
research in NC, TN, and KY records is needed with regard to al!
l of the above-mentioned individuals."
Another
probable daughter of Henry is the Nancy CARLOCK, b. ca. 1787, who m. George
GRIMES, ca. 1802, Campbell Co., TN; d. Mar. 15, 1864, Knoxville, Ray Co.,
MO; and is bd. in Millville, Ray Co., MO.
The names of George's children
and grandchildren may provide clues to the names of his parents. George
and Rachel are not known to have had a son named David, but they did have
a grandson named David (s/o Jacob). They did have a son named Henry, but
this is not necessarily significant because, as mentioned above, Rachel's
father was also named Henry. George and Rachel are believed to have named
two daughters Elizabeth, which was the name of David's wife. George and
Rachel are not known to have had a daughter named Sarah or Sallie. Henry's
wife was named Sarah and called "Sallie". George and Rachel did name a
daughter Catherine, which was the name of Rachel's mother.

Subject: Family of David Carlock of Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY
Below is what I have found on the probable family of David Carlock of
Mecklenburg Co., NC, and Warren Co., KY. I have listed his two known
children and his other probable children based on much indirect
evidence:
George W. Carlock b.c. 1781, m. Rachael Landers, d.1840-50 prob.
Fayette Co., IL
Mary H. Carlock b.c. 1784, m. Thomas Heffington
Catherine Carlock b.c. 1789, m. James Hendricks
Margaret Carlock b. 1789, m. Barnabus Lowe, d. 1840 Jasper Co., TX
John D. Carlock b.c. 1795, m. Polly Gibson, lived Missouri
*William Vance Carlock b.c. 1797, m. Fannie ?, d.c. 1839 Stoddard Co,
MO
I have concluded (and it may never be proven) that David Carlock is my
William Vance Carlock's father because (1) He sold land in Stoddard
Co., MO, to proven son of David, John D. Carlock. (2) He named a son
David.
Below, now, is my chronology of David Carlock b.c. 1755 NC, m.
Elizabeth ?, d.c. 1815 Warren Co., KY:
**********************
c. 1789 - Dtr Catherine born (relationship proven on marriage license
in Warren Co., KY)
c. 1781 - Probable son George born
c. 1784 - Probable dtr Mary born
c. 1791 - Probable dtr Margaret born
1792: Signed petition against the division of Mecklenburg Co., NC,
into more counties. Capt. Chas. T. Alexander's Company included David
Carlock. [Reference: Newsletter of Mecklenburg Co., NC, Historical
Soceity, pg. 4]
1795: April, Item 1:128, David Carlock recorded purchase of Lot 9, SE
Square, town of Concord. [Citation: "Cabarrus Co., NC, Court of
Common Pleas 1793-1787 and Deed Books 1793-1801", pg. 26]
c. 1795: Son John D. born (relationship proven on marriage license in
Warren Co., KY)
1796: April 18, Item 2:132, John Means, James Scott and Leonard
Barberick, Commissioners, sold to DAVID CARLOCK for 1 pound, 6
shillings and 6 pence Lot #9 in the SE Square of the TOWN OF CONCORD.
Witness John Simianer. Proven April 1796. [Citation: "Cabarrus Co.,
NC, Court of Common Pleas 1793-1787 and Deed Books 1793-1801", pg. 54]
David seemed to be a merchant and/or craftsman, which may account for
his sometimes not owning and being taxed for land later on; he could
have rented his shop in town. (See 1798 below)
c. 1797: Probable son William Vance born
1798: David Kerlock was on pg. 40 of Captain Joseph Smith's Co. tax
list with no acreage and one white poll. [Citation: Tax Lists of
Mecklenburg Co., NC]. Was David in the process of moving to KY at this
time? Or had he decided to just rent a shop in Concord? (See 1796
above)

William Lowe was the father of Elizabeth's dtr. Margaret's husband,
Barnabus Lowe.
