Since I posted the info below I have learned so much more.
The 1st paragraph is correct to the best of my knowledge and I have a copy
of the newspaper clipping posting his escape from jail.
His mothers name is correct also, but her 1st husband was Andrew Nelson and
they had 2 children John and Lucy. Andrew died when a tree that was being
cut down fell on him.
Martha Jane Mitchell Nelson then married Zachariah Carlock and she had 2
more children it would appear from the 1880 census, Henry born abt 1878 and
she has the two Nelson children with her, then Charles Monroe Carlock born
March 13 1881 which you will never see living with his mother. But according
to the 1880 census Martha is a widow and Zach is living in a different
county in the 1880 census.
Martha Jane Mitchell Nelson Carlock then married William Mason who was about
12 years younger than her and they had 6 children-William Apr 1885, Franklin
Jul 12 1886, robert May 22 1889, Mary Jan 1891, James Mar 1893 and Ella Jun
18 1894.
Martha died Sept 25 1942 and William died aug 21 1933, both are buried at
Old Pine Hill Cemetery Sicily Island Catahoula Parrish Louisiana.
The name Bruce came into play when John Nelson son of Martha changed it and
so did his sister. I do not know why. That info came from a cousin in LA who
had heard that they were in some kind of trouble and Martha instructed them
to change their name?? John Nelson Bruce is buried at Old Pine Hill Cemetery
close to where his mother is buried. He became known as Bud Bruce. Lucy his
sister was called Nettie and married David Weaver. They are both buried at
the New Pine Hill Cemetery.
Martha's mother was Luanana Evans and went by the name Lucy Ann. She married
Charles S Mitchell Dec 22 1850 in Franklin Mississippi. In the 1860 census
they are living at Rose Fields Catahoula Parrish LA and they had the
following children- Clarinda abt 1852, Martha Jun 18 1854 and Elizabeth abt
1858.
From my research I think Charles S Mitchell died abt May 1 1862 at
Camp
Moore LA due to an epidemic at the camp.
In the 1880 census I find M Carlock with children living next door to Owen &
Luanana Whittington and I have speculated that this his her mother.
I have never been able to find a marriage certrificate for Luanana Mitchell
to a Whittington. The only info that I have are the two pictures as
mentioned in the original post with the two names Evans/Whittington.
Charles Monroe Carlock did marry Mary Idella Wallace and she was the
daughter of Robert Corley Wallace and Arinda Elizabeth Brown. Robert and
Arinda are buried Mt Plesant Baptist Cemetery in Bogue Chitto MS. Charles
took his wifes mothers maiden name when he came to TX.
My grandfather was Cleon (Carlock) Brown, son of Charles and Mary, brother
to Henry (Carlock) Brown.

I have a picture of Lucy Ann Evans. I had never knew how she was related to
the family other than a grandparent. My grandfather was Henry Brown son of
Lawrence Brown and Mary Wallace all buried in the Baker Cemetery in
Henderson County,Texas. I knew that there was a name change and his father
had changed his name when he was on the run from the law, but was never told
the whole story. Was told the name was Carlisle instead of Carlock, but
have seen the 1910 census where it was indeed Carlock. Please share any
info you may have. Thanks, Vada
