This is in reply to Mark CARLOCK's Mar. 25, 2009, and Mar. 26, 2009, postings to the
RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board on the subject of the ancestry of his grandfather Clyde
Carl CARLOCK, Sr.; b. Feb., 1882; of Camp Co., TX.
I have done some simple census research this weekend, but have been unable to find any
information to definitively link your Black CARLOCK ancestors to any of the White CARLOCK
families of Camp Co., TX. I would suggest searching in Upshur Co., Texas, records for any
wills or probate records of the heads of the White CARLOCK families of those counties to
see if you can find any mention of your great-grandmother Susan. Camp County was formed
from Upshur County in 1874.
You might also try further census research to see if you can find Susan named on either
the 1850 or 1860 census. I do not have Internet access to the 1850 census. According to
my findings, Susan was probably born from 1840 to 1845, in Alabama, Arkansas, or Georgia.
(I found conflicting information.) Unfortunately, I was unable to identify the name of
your great-grandfather, the father of Clyde Carl CARLOCK, Sr.
A Google search also brings up some books and other resources which are available on the
topic of African-American genealogical research. You might check out some of these
resources to see if they can help you with your search.
I continue to collect information in my genealogical database on all CARLOCK families. I
have found additional information on Camp Co., TX, CARLOCK families which I have not yet
been able to connect to either the White or Black CARLOCK families of Camp Co., TX. I
highly suspect that most of this information belongs to members of your branch of CARLOCKs
since all of the White CARLOCKs appear to have moved to different counties by the time of
the 1920 census. (Carl CARLOCK, age 12, is erroneously listed in the HeritageQuest 1920
index as White, when the census actually lists him as "Mu," for mulatto.)
Please let me know if you are interested in any of these fragments of information.
