Thanks for taking the time to provide me all of this great information. Clyde Carl
Carlock was my grandfather, Rohelia was my grandmother and T. Charlie (Thurston Charles)
Carlock is my father.
Clyde Carl's mother was Susan who was listed as head of household born in Alabama and
who's parents were both from virginia. This is from the 1880 Census for Camp County,
Texas enumerated by Marcus DeWitt Carlock. Clyde Carl shows up in the 1900 census living
with Susan who says that is married and has been for 30 years at the time. She is living
with her son in law - Reman Balwell (Calwell) and her daughter Mary.
What I am trying to determine is the origin of the Black Carlocks - I know that MP Carlock
states that "John migrated to northern Alabama and is the progenitor of most of the
Carlocks of Alabama and Mississippi in adition to many in Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas.
He was a wealthy man and owned many hundreds of acres of land and had many slaves."
The only Calocks living in Camp County at the same time as Susan were Marcus and Thomas -
As enumerator of the census I don't think Marcus would have let susan just use the
last name Carlock so I am wondering if MD or TT might have had slaves that they brought
from Alabama to Texas?
