I show Bernardo F. "Bernard" CARLOCK's lineage as follows. If you send me
an e-mail address, I will send you a computer-generated report for your branch of the
CARLOCK family.
Abraham "Abram" CARLOCK, Sr. (1798 - 1865)
Abraham "Abram" CARLOCK, Jr. (1825 - 1914)
Daniel J. CARLOCK (b. 1856)
Bernardo F. "Bernard" CARLOCK (1876 - 1930) -- New York City firefighter
(Deputy Fire Chief), Dept. Chief Division 4. Died in line of duty when overcome by
smoke.
Abraham Sr. was born in New Jersey, but lived in New York City. His son Abraham Jr. was
born in Fort Lee, Bergen Co., New Jersey, which leads me to believe that they are probably
descended from the immigrant Coenraad "Conrad" GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK, who was
born in 1660 in Heidelberg, Germany, but migrated with other members of his family to
Holland before migrating to America and settling in Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey.
Coenraad was a son of Johan Peter "Hans" GERLACH who was born in 1631 in Kusel,
Pfalz "Palatinate" (Germany). Coenraad has descendants who use both the
"Carlock" and "Carlough" (pronounced like "Carlow")
spellings for their surnames. Many of his descendants can be found in New Jersey, but
some can also be found in the New York City area, and one branch migrated to Licking Co.,
Ohio. The professional drummer Keith CARLOCK is descended from that Ohio branch by way of
Mississippi.
Coenraad's brother Johan Christian GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK (1669 - 1764) settled in
the Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys of New York. He arrived in America with his family in
1710 on the ship "James & Elizabeth." Most of his descendants used the
spelling "Garlock," but some of his descendants in the New York City area used
the spelling "Carlock." His GARLOCK descendants can be found mostly in the
northeastern portion of the United States, including Michigan. I have not yet done
extensive research for the GARLOCK surname.
Coenraad and Johan Christian's younger brother David GERLACH/CARLOCK (1674 - 1763)
migrated first to Pennsylvania, then to Augusta Co., Virginia. Most of the CARLOCKs in
the United States and Mexico today are descendants of David. He also has descendants who
use the "Carelock," "Cearlock" (pronounced like "Carelock"),
and "Curlock" spellings. The Revolutionary War soldier Hanchrist CARLOCK (ca.
1715 - 1803) whom you mentioned was one of David's sons. I am descended from
David's son Frederick CARLOCK (1720 - 1792) who migrated to the portion of Mecklenburg
Co., North Carolina, which later became Cabarrus Co.
The Mexican branch of the CARLOCK family is related to us. They are descended from Milton
Thompson "Tomás" CARLOCK (1831 - 1881), a descendant of the above-mentioned
Revolutionary War soldier Hanchrist CARLOCK. Many of his descendants can be found in the
state of Oaxaca, as well as the Mexico City area. A CARLOCK reunion is held each December
in Oaxaca.
There are also a few CURLOCK families in Canada. I have not yet found any of those
families to be connected to our CARLOCK family. In one case CURLOCK was Anglicized from
the surname KURYLUK.
There are some CARLOCK and KARLOCK families found in the West Virginia and Pennsylvania
areas who are also not related to our family, with their ancestors being more recent
immigrants from Eastern Europe with surnames such as KARLIAK that sounded similar to
CARLOCK and were later Anglicized to CARLOCK or KARLOCK.
There are also a few Black CARLOCK and CARELOCK families found primarily in the southern
portion of the United States, very likely connected with some of David's descendants
who settled in the southern portion of the United States.
