Ted:
Thank you for the information about the family of David Gaston GARLICK. This confirms
that Hans GERLACH, b. 1632, Heidelberg, Germany, did indeed have some descendants in
America who used the spelling GARLICK! Three of Hans's sons migrated to America,
Conrad GERLACH/CARLOCK, Johann Christian GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK, and David
GERLACH/CARLOCK. Hans GERLACH's descendants who used the spelling GARLICK are most
likely descended from Johann Christian, but I do not yet know the exact connection.
According to pages 30 - 32 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by
Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, "Both Conrad and Johann first settled at Livingston
Manor on the Hudson in New York. ... Conrad finally drifted down the Hudson to Fort Lee,
now Bergen County, New Jersey, where he raised his family and Johann went to the
Schoharie-Mohawk Valley, New York, where he was the leader and one of twenty-seven head
men to get an Indian title to 12,700 acres of land known as the 'Stone Arabia'
patent. ... Many of the New York, New Jersey and Ohio Carlocks are descended from Conrad
Carlock.
Johann Christian ... never left the Mohawk Valley. ... Johann Christian Garlock is the
progenitor of most of the Carlocks and Garlocks of New York.
It is known from both history and tradition that because of the alleged ill treatment of
the Palatines in New York, word was sent back to England and Holland that New York had
treated them badly and for their relatives and friends not to come there but to seek
passage on ships bound for Philadelphia. It is thought that David Carlock ... took this
advice and came in via Philadelphia. ...
David Carlock ... emigrated with others across southern Pennsylvania into western
Virginia. ...
... David Carlock of Augusta County, Virginia, is the progenitor of practically all
Carlocks in America, Canada and Mexico with the exception of those in New Jersey, New
York, Indiana and a few in Ohio."

Dear Susan,
The one major family that I know of has a David Gaston Garlick in it. The line started
with a Hans Gerlach from Germany. They started out in upstate NY and were Mormons.

Ted:
Thanks for the information. I am not actually GARLICK descendant. I am subscribed to
the GARLICK list because some descendants of the three GERLACH brothers who migrated to
the United States in the early 1700s may have used the surname GARLICK. Most descendants
of those three brothers used the surname CARLOCK, but some in the New York area used the
surname GARLOCK, and possibly GARLICK. My Virginia/North Carolina line also used the
surnames
CARELOCK and CEARLOCK (my maiden name). I have information about the three
brothers and their descendants on my home page under the report titled "User Home
Page Genealogy Report: Descendants of Hans GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK". The URL for my
home page is:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/index.h....
Please let me know if you ever come across any information about GARLICKs who are
descended from these three brothers. I am trying to include as many
descendants as
possible in the report on my home page.
