This is a follow-up to my previous query titled, "John CARLOCK (b. 1866, GA) of Wayne
Co., IL."
Correction: The wife with Ezra GWIN on the 1880 census would have been from a marriage
after Mary C. (CARLOCK?) DICKEY (John CARLOCK's mother). Mary DICKEY is believed to
have died in 1878. She and her reported parents, William Robert DICKEY and Salina Simon
VERNON DICKEY, are all buried at the Dickeyville Cemetery in Wayne Co., IL. See the
following site:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSln=Withrow&GSi...
Prairie Cemetery&
This site states that Mary's parents were both born in North Carolina.
I also find the following information in my database. This is noteworthy because it was
common for families to have more than one connection to each other.
William H. CARLOCK m. Mary A. DICKEY (b. 1825), d/o Moses DICKEY and Susannah BALLARD. I
have not yet been able to connect William H. CARLOCK to the rest of the CARLOCK family
tree.
There are many DICKEYs buried in the Dickeyville Cemetery, including Rev. David Ballard
DICKEY, b. 1814, Buncombe Co., NC, who m. Nancy A. S. PAGE, d/o Silas and Jane (VERNON)
PAGE. Note the common names of VERNON and BALLARD.
Pages 505 of the third edition of "Red Book," (Provo, UT: The Generations
Network, Inc., 2004) states that Buncombe Co., NC, was formed from portions of Burke Co.
and Rutherford Co. in 1791. Henry CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK, s/o Frederick
CARLOCK/CARELOCK of Mecklenburg Co., NC (1720 - 1792) and his family were in Rutherford
Co., NC, at the time of the 1790 census, but migrated to nearby Campbell and Anderson
Counties in TN by 1806. Henry appears to have been closely associated with Joseph
CARLOCK, orphaned son of Lemuel CARLOCK (s/o Lemuel, Hanchrist, David), who d. after 1823,
possibly Campbell Co., TN. Joseph's sons James B. CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Sr. (1800 - 1865)
and Joseph Taylor CARLOCK (1802 - 1857) both migrated to Walker Co., GA, by way of Marion
Co., TN.
Also note that James B. CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Sr., had a son named William H. CARLOCK (1827 -
1899) who m. Pollyann (1826 - 1863), in 1844, and Mary A. HAMILTON (b. 1852, GA, d/o
Alexander C. HAMILTON and Nancy CALLAHAN), in 1865, TN. I show the following residences
for this William H. CARLOCK: Campbell Co., TN, 1830; Walker Co., GA, 1850, 1860; migrated
to Yell Co., AR, in 1869, then Conway Co., AR, in 1879; lived on Petit Jean Mountain,
Cedar Falls Township, AR. At this point I do not yet have any information to connect this
William H. CARLOCK to the above-mentioned William H. CARLOCK who m. Mary A. DICKEY.
Since John CARLOCK was born in GA in 1866 and, according to the 1880 census, both of his
parents were also born in GA, it seems likely that John CARLOCK's father was a member
of one of these Walker Co., GA, branches of the CARLOCK family tree. Please let me know
if anyone finds a record of John or his parents in GA.
