Following is a summary of information gathered so far with regard to the
descendants of Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, b. 1632, Kusel, Pfalz,
Germany. Three
of Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH’s sons, Coenraad GERLACH, Johann Christian
GERLACH, and David GERLACH, are known to have migrated from Germany to
Holland several years before migrating to America. The book “History of
the Carlock Family,” which was written by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK in 1929
does not include information about Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH, but instead
starts with the three immigrant brothers. Information about Hans Peter
GERLOCH/GERLACH can be found in German records which have been copied by
members of the LDS Church. Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK’s book deals primarily
with those descendants of the three immigrant brothers who used the
Anglicized “CARLOCK” spelling of the surname “GERLACH.” I maintain a list
of sources for viewing or obtaining copies of Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK’s book.
See the following thread for a copy of that list:

Johann Christian GERLACH arrived in New York, June 10, 1710, from London,
on the ship “James & Elizabeth,” with his wife and children. Johann
Christian and his family migrated to the Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys of
New York. Most of his known descendants used the spelling “GARLOCK” and
remained in the northeastern portion of the United States. Some of his
CARLOCK descendants migrated to New York City. I have not yet done
extensive research on the GARLOCK surname.
The immigrant brother Coenraad “Conrad” GERLACH settled in Hackensack,
Bergen Co., New Jersey. His descendants are known to have used the
spellings “CARLOCK” and “CARLOUGH.” Most of his CARLOUGH descendants can
be found in New Jersey and nearby counties in New York. Some of his
CARLOCK descendants migrated to New York City, Ohio and Indiana. The
professional drummer Keith CARLOCK, born in Washington Co., Mississippi, is
descended from the Licking Co., Ohio, branch of this family.
The immigrant brother David GERLACH, my ancestor, migrated to Pennsylvania,
then migrated with the historical figure Yost HEYDT from Pennsylvania to
Virginia in 1732, settling in Augusta Co., Virginia, by 1741. (Information
about Yost HEYDT can be found elsewhere on the Internet.) Most of the
CARLOCKs found in the United States and Mexico are descended from David. Many
of David’s descendants migrated to Illinois.
David’s son Hanchrist CARLOCK was a Revolutionary War soldier from Virginia
who fought under the command of General George WASHINGTON. Prior to the
Revolutionary War Hanchrist is also believed to have worked with George
WASHINGTON in connection with building roads in Virginia. Their names are
chiseled near each other on one of the walls of the Natural Bridge rock
formation in Virginia. Most of Hanchrist’s descendants used the spelling
“CARLOCK,” but one branch in Oklahoma used the spellings “CEARLOCK”
(pronounced like “CARELOCK”), and “CURLOCK.” Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK,
author of the book “History of the Carlock Family,” was descended from
Hanchrist. U.S. Army Specialist Ryan Gene CARLOCK, from Macomb, Illinois,
who died in 2003 from wounds received while serving on active duty in Iraq,
was also descended from Hanchrist. See my previous posting at the
following site for additional information about the Natural Bridge rock
formation chiselings:

David’s son Frederick migrated to the portion of Mecklenburg Co., North
Carolina, which became Cabarrus County in 1792. Some of his descendants
used the spelling “CARLOCK.” One branch, found primarily in the southern
portion of the United States, used the spelling “CARELOCK.” Yet another
branch migrated to Illinois and used the spellings “CEARLOCK” and “CURLOCK.”
I am a member of this Illinois branch of the CEARLOCK family. The book
“History of the Carelocks,” by Mrs. Smith (Mary Lou) MEDLIN, 1973, includes
information about some members of the CARELOCK branch of the family. I
have found some errors relating to Frederick’s descendants in Marion
Pomeroy CARLOCK’s book “History of the Carlock Family. See the reports on
my home page for more accurate information on these lines. I have started
a list of sources for viewing or obtaining copies of Mrs. Smith MEDLIN’s
book. See the following thread for a copy of that list:

There are also some black CARLOCK and CARELOCK families in the United
States who are not believed to be biologically related to the white
branches of the family. I do have some information about these black
families in my database which I would be willing to share upon request.
Furthermore, I have found three branches of CURLOCKs in Canada. The
Alberta, Canada, branch originally spelled their surname “KURYLUK,” and are
not believed to be related to the CURLOCK families in the United States and
Mexico. The New Brunswick, Canada, branch is descended from John CURLOCK
who was born ca. 1849 in England. John is also not believed to be related
to the CURLOCK families in the United States and Mexico. I have not yet
determined the origin of the Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, branch of the
CURLOCK family. They are descended from John CURLOCK, born Dec. 28,
1916. Estevan
is located near the North Dakota border.
I have also not yet been able to link the television writer and producer
Robert Morgan CARLOCK’s Massachusetts branch of the CARLOCK family to the
rest of the CARLOCK family tree, but I do have some information about his
parents and grandparents.
Individuals spelling their surname “KARLOCK” can also be found in the
United States. I have not yet found any of these KARLOCK branches to be
related to the rest of the CARLOCK family tree. Censuses show some of them
to have migrated to the United States from places such as Russia, Poland,
Germany, Austria, and Hungary.
I have also not yet found any members of this family to have continued
using the “GERLACH” spelling for their surname after the first couple of
generations in America, but I have not yet ruled out the possibility that
such lines might exist.
I have also not yet ruled out the possibility that this family may be
related to the CARLOWs who live near the CARLOUGH (pronounced like CARLOW)
branch of this family in New Jersey.
Furthermore, I also have not yet ruled out the possibility that Steven
GARLICK, b. 1750 – 1756, Bedford, Bedford Co., PA, may be related to this
family, as has been proposed by some researchers. However, one researcher
believes Steven to instead be descended from the GARLITZ family of western
Maryland.
At least one male CARLOCK descendant and one male CEARLOCK descendant have
participated in DNA studies which may eventually provide answers to some of
these questions. See the following thread for further information on this
subject:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carlock/messages/499.html
Also note that members of the Illinois branch of the CEARLOCK/CURLOCK
family are distant cousins to President Harry S. TRUMAN through Rachel
LANDERS CEARLOCK’s (1783 – 1847) GUTKNECHT/GOODNIGHT and LANDIS/LANDERS
ancestry. They are also distant cousins to the Texas cattleman and
trailblazer Charles GOODNIGHT through Rachel’s GUTKNECHT/GOODNIGHT ancestry.
They are also possibly distant cousins to President Barack OBAMA and the
sculptor Veryl GOODNIGHT through Rachel’s GUTKNECHT/GOODNIGHT ancestors. See
the following sites for additional information on these subjects:

I welcome additions and corrections to the information in the reports which
appear on my home page.
