I am trying to determine the ancestry of the following three individuals who I believe to
have been siblings. Censuses differ in the birth places of their parents, with the father
possibly being born in TN, KY, or IL, and the mother possibly being born in TN or TX.
Nellie B. CARLOCK, b. Aug. 1881, TX; m. James F. "J. F." LEE, Feb. 1, 1899,
Runnels Co., TX; Nellie and her family lived in Jones Co., TX, 1900; Stamford, Jones Co.,
TX, 1910; and Jones Co., TX, 1920.
Harry CARLOCK, b. Aug. 2, 1886, (WWI draft card says b. "Beard," Texas, but
"Baird," Texas seems more likely); m. Jessie Arminta (or L.) (GRAY or GRAVES),
Jan. 27, 1914, Cochise Co., AZ. This was a second marriage for Jessie. She had previously
married Charles L. (ELEM or ELMS), Dec. 25, 1904, Runnels Co., TX. Harry d. Aug. 29,
1951, rural Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ. Residences for Harry were Runnels Co., TX, 1900;
Stanford, Jones Co., TX, 1910; Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ, 1917; Maricopa Co., AZ, 1920;
and resident of rural Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ, for last 46 years of his life.
Charlie O. CARLOCK, b. Mar. 28, 1888, Baird, Callahan Co., TX; residence Jones Co., TX,
1900; d. Nov. 21, 1918 (transcribed tombstone date of 1913 believed to be an error, as
explained below); bd. Ross Cemetery, Baird, Callahan Co., TX. (Could cause of death have
been the 1918 flu pandemic or World War I? The Armistace was signed on Nov. 11, 1918.)
The Find-a-Grave site shows listings for the following CARLOCKs buried in the Ross
Cemetery, Baird, Callahan Co., TX:
Charlie O. CARLOCK, b. Feb. 29, 1888; d. Nov. 21, 1913 (sic). He could not have died in
1913 because I find a World War I draft card for Charlie CARLOCK dated Sept. 21, 1917.
Could the death date be 1918 instead? The draft card lists Charlie as a cook employed by
J. F. LEE in Stamford, Jones Co., TX.
Frank CARLOCK -- no dates
Freddie CARLOCK -- no dates
Louisa CARLOCK, wife of W. V. CARLOCK, b. Sept. 16, 1850; d. Mar. 14, 1892.
Minnie CARLOCK -- no dates
Willie CARLOCK -- no dates
I theorize that W. V. CARLOCK and his wife Louisa could have been the parents of Nellie,
Harry, and Charlie. Charlie appears to have been orphaned by his mother as he was listed
as a boarder, age 11, in the household of his probable sister Nellie and her husband at
the time of the 1900 census, with both Nellie and Charlie having the birth places of both
parents listed as Tennessee. Louisa's death date of 1892 would fit with this theory.
Frank, Freddie, Minnie, and Willie could be other children of W. V. and Louisa, probably
all dying young. Note that the name Willie could be a clue that "W. V." could
stand for "William V." There is a William V. CARLOCK, Confederate soldier, Co.
E. 32nd Miss. Inf. Lowry's Bri; b. 1833, MO; d. Nov. 14, 1915, bd. In the Texas State
Cemetery, Austin, Travis Co., TX, who I have not yet been able to place in the CARLOCK
family tree. However, Travis County is not near Callahan County, Jones County, and
Runnels County, which are all near each !
other.
At the time of the 1910 census I find a Charles CARLOCK, age 22, b. TX, listed as a
"brother" in the household of John BURTON, age 63, b. IN; and his wife Maggie
BURTON, age 39, b. AR, in Kaufman Co., TX. I do not have John BURTON listed in my
database, and Kaufman County is several counties away from Callahan County, Jones County,
and Runnels County, so I do not know if this is the same Charles CARLOCK. If it is the
same Charles CARLOCK, perhaps Maggie was another child of W. V. CARLOCK and his wife
Louisa.
I have not yet been able to locate Louisa or W. V. CARLOCK on any of the censuses.
Does anyone have any information which could help me sort out this family and their
ancestry? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
