This is in reply to Sally E.'s (sally_e(a)hotmail.com) Jan. 2, 2000, posting to the
RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled "Carlock married Miller."
I have located your great-grandfather John J. CARLOCK on the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses
for New York City.
I believe John's father to be William CARLOCK, b. ca. 1828 - 1832, NY or NJ, an iron
"moulder" living in New York City at the time of the 1850 and 1870 censuses. I
believe his mother to have been William's wife Margaret, b. ca. 1828, Ireland.
Censuses also show John to have had siblings Mary J. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1851, NY; Anna
"Annie" CARLOCK, b. ca. 1856, NY; and Emily "Emma" CARLOCK, b. ca.
1861, NY.
I believe William's father to have been Abraham CARLOCK, b. 3 Dec 1798, NJ; d. 17 Dec
1865, New York City, an oysterman (?) and iron "moulder" living in New York City
at the time of the 1850 census. I believe William's mother to have been Abraham's
wife Rachel, b. ca. 1812, NY or NJ; d. New York City. So far I have located Rachel on the
1850 and 1880 censuses for New York City.
Abraham and Rachel appear on page 430 of the book "History of the Carlock
Family" by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, but I believe some of the information on
this page to be incorrect. According to my records, the Abraham CARLOCK who was son of
Jeremiah (CARLOUGH) CARLOCK and Elizabeth LOZIER and had children named William Henry
CARLOCK (b. Aug. 1826, New York City), Lorena/Laurena CARLOCK (b. 1837 - 1838, NY), Sidney
J. CARLOCK (b. May 1840, NJ), Charles Francis CARLOCK (b. May 1842, NJ), and Emma M.
CARLOCK (b. Mar. 1846, NJ), was referred to as Abraham/Abram CARLOCK Esq. and can be found
on the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses for Hackensack, Bergen Co., NJ, and the 1880 census
for Fort Lee, Bergen Co., NJ. This Abraham/Abram CARLOCK's son William Henry m.
Elizabeth DAY. To further complicate matters, this Abraham apparently also had a wife
named Rachel. According to my records, this Abraham/Abram m. Rachel P. (b. ca. 1806,
NJ).
I have not yet identified the parents of your gr.-gr.-gr.-grandfather Abraham CARLOCK (b.
1798), but believe that he is probably descended from either the immigrant Coenraad
"Conrad" GERLACH/GERLAG/CARLOCK (1660 - ca. 1712) of Hackensack, Bergen Co., NJ,
or his immigrant brother Johann Christian GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK (1669 - 1764) of the
Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys of New York. Both of these brothers had CARLOCK descendants
living in New York City.
