This is the second of several sets of updates and corrections to the article I wrote,
titled "352 FAMILY OF GEORGE CARLOCK (1740-1815)," which appears on pages 143
and 144 of the recently-published book titled "The Heritage of Old Mecklenburg County
North Carolina,1763-2003."
On page 144 of that article I wrote: "Six children have been identified for this
couple [George CARLOCK/KERLOCK/CERLAUGH and Fanny Mildren PLEMONS]. They are: 1. Samuel
A. Carlock/Carelock, born 1763, in Mecklenburg County, who married a woman with the
surname Carothers. ...
Four children have been identified for George's son Samuel A. Carlock/Carelock, also a
resident of Mecklenburg County. They are: 1. Samuel A. Carelock, born August 12, 1793,
Mecklenburg county, who married Hester Brooks, migrated to Smith County, Texas, by 1865,
and died there November 14, 1873; 2. Isabelle Carlock, who married William Jackson
Wallace, and migrated to Texas with her husband in 1856, where she eventually died; 3.
William Carlock, born in 1830, probably a Civil War casualty; and 4. Jacob Gibson
Carlock, born 1832, in Charlotte, who married Sarah Ann Canterbury."
Descendants of Samuel A. CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Sr., and his wife may also be interested to
know that immediately following my article, also on page 144 of the same book, is an
article titled “353 THE CAROTHERS FAMILY OF MECKLENBURG COUNTY,” on the subject of the
early CAROTHERS family in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Samuel A. CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Sr., and his
wife are not mentioned in the article.
I now believe that Isabelle CARLOCK and James (or Jacob) Gibson CARLOCK were instead
children of the elder Samuel's son Samuel A. CARELOCK, Jr., and his wife Hester
BROOKS. The incorrect information about Isabelle and James (or Jacob) Gibson being
children of the elder Samuel comes from page 616 of the book "History of the Carlock
Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929.
On that same page Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK also lists the following individual as a child of
the elder Samuel: "William, b. 1830; d. _____; served in Civil War and it is
believed he was killed in action as nothing has been heard from him since." So far I
have found no evidence of the elder Samuel having a son that fits this description.
The younger Samuel had a son named William A. (of J.) CARELOCK , b. 1818, Union Co., NC,
who died in August of 1862, Union Co., NC, and is bd. in the Old Carelock Cemetery near
the Union Baptist Church, south of Monroe, NC. Since Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK said that
"nothing has been heard from him since," in reference to the William he listed
as s/o the elder Samuel, it does not appear that he was referring to this William.
The author could have mistakenly been referring to William Vance (or A.) CARLOCK (s/o
William Vance CARLOCK, probably David CARLOCK, probably Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH, ) and his wife Frances "Fannie." William Vance
(of A.) CARLOCK was b. 1834, Cape Girardeau, Stoddard Co., MO; d. Apr. 16, 1863, as a
Civil War casualty, either at Milliken's Bend, Warren Co., MS, or in Madison Parish,
LA; and is bd. in the Vicksburg National Cemetery, Vicksburg, Warren Co., MS. William was
a private in the 31st Regiment of the Missouri Infantry.
The author could have even been confusing this William Vance CARLOCK with William Voules
Culton (or Vance) CARLOCK (s/o Jacob C. CARLOCK, Jr.; Jacob “Jake” CARLOCK, Sr.; Hanchrist
CARLOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH), who is listed on page 597 of the book
“History of the Carlock Family” as “b. _____ in Mo.; d. 1924 in Old Soldiers’ Home,Austin,
Tex.; 1st wife Elizabeth Tatum, who was b. _____ and d. _____ 1898 in Miss.; second wife
unknown.” I have three children listed for this William Voules Culton (or Vance) CARLOCK:
1. John Charles/Clinton CARLOCK/KERLOCK, b. Apr. 8, 1853, MS; m. Manerva Jane SURRATT,
Jan. 19, 1873, Tippah Co., MS; 2. a son, name unknown, listed by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK
as residing in Mississippi; and 3. Joan CARLOCK who m. Milton Lewis JOHNSON, Jr., Dec.
22, 1880, Union Co., MS.
I am also unable to determine at this time whether or not the above-mentioned William
Voules Culton (or Vance) CARLOCK is the same individual as the William Vance Colton
CARLOCK listed as follows at the following site and on the 1880 census for Cloars School
House, Obion Co., TN:

According to the following site, there was also a William W. CARELOCK and a Jacob G.
CARELOCK, who were Civil War soldiers, members of the 23rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment,
"Co. G Tippah Riflemen from Ripley and Ruckersville, mustered into State service near
Ripley 1 June 1861." I have not yet been able to identify this William W. CARELOCK
and Jacob G. CARELOCK.

In addition to the above-mentioned Jacob Gibson CARLOCK (s/o Samuel A. CARELOCK, Jr.;
Samuel A. CARLOCK/CARELOCK, Sr.; George CARLOCK/KERLOCK/CERLAUGH, Frederick
CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH), b. ca. 1829 TN, m. Sarah; d. ca.
1872; bd. in the Old West Cemetery, Vernon Parish, LA, there was also a Jacob G. CARLOCK
(s/o Job CARLOCK, Hanchrist CARLOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH), b. Sept. 30,
1821, Overton Co., TN; m. Nancy ANDREWS; and d. of typhoid fever, Oct. 19, 1860, near
Livingston, TN; who, according to page 598 of the book “History of the Carlock Family,”
had a brother named William Baker CARLOCK, b. Apr. 5, 1820. I believe these are the same
individuals as the Jacob G. CARLOCK, age 21, b. TN, and William CARLOCK, age 16, b. TN,
farmers, who were living in Tippah Co., MS, at the time of the 1850 census. Marion
Pomeroy CARLOCK lists William’s birthdate as Apr. 5, 1820, and says that he was unmarried.
If these !
are the same individuals, William’s age/birthdate was incorrect in one of the two places.
I also believe that the Mary CARLOCK, age 53, b. NC, living in the same household at the
time of the 1850 census was Jacob and William’s older half-sister, listed on page 598 of
“History of the Carlock Family,” as b. July 14, 1799. This Jacob G. and William CARLOCK
seem likely candidates to be the William CARELOCK and Jacob G. CARELOCK who were members
of the 23rd Mississippi Infantry. However, if the death date Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK gave
of Oct. 19, 1860, for Jacob is correct, this could not be the same individual as the Jacob
G. CARELOCK who was mustered into service in 1861. The middle initial of “W.” listed on
the 23rd Mississippi Infantry site also does not match the middle name of “Baker” for
William CARLOCK (s/o Job CARLOCK, Hanchrist CARLOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH).
See the following site for a !

Much additional research is needed to sort out the various Jacob G. CARLOCKs and William
CARLOCKs.
