OK, USC won, so now I can concentrate on dead Dade Countians.
Having read all the names, dates and places you folks have cited--maybe we
should just roll dice, or use a dart board, or draw straws to establish the
"correct" information for these people!
Also--for the record, I have done zero, zip, nada--no research whatsoever on
this family. I just happen to be related to them and own a 651-page book
about them (and many others).
Anyhow--quoting from page 559 of the
not-always-either-reliable-or-consistent -History of the Carlock Family and
Adventures of Pioneer Americans- compiled and published by Marion Pomeroy
Carlock in Los Angeles in 1929:
ASENATH CARLOCK b. Overton Co., Tenn, 1822; m. Calvin Wheeler, 1842, Dade
Co., Mo. (Husband b. 1813; d. Feb. 14, 1877); d. Nov. 1889. Husband
Confederate soldier, farmer, stock raiser, and postmaster of his village for
many years. Children (Wheeler):
1. Sarah Eliza, b. May 1844; m. Judge Franzo K. Crawford, 1867; he was b.
1844 at Ashgrove [sic], Mo.; d. 1925; farmer, stock raiser and banker. She
d. 1926.
Note: Elsewhere the book says Sarah Eliza was b. near Everton, Mo., April
1845 and d. 1926; m. Crawford in 1866; Crawford b. Mar. 18, 1844 in Ash
Grove and d. Dec. 16, 1925.
2. Mary Electa, b. May 1846; m. Dr. William R. Appleby, Jan. 1868; d. 1893.
3. Allen Perry, b. Apr. 15, 1849; d. Oct. 1884.
4. Martin Luther, b. Oct. 8, 1871 [sic: typo? should be 1851?]; r.
Florence, Colo. Pioneer farmer, stockman and hotel-keeper; d. June 1929.
5. Ann Elizabeth, b. May 1853; m. William J. Sullivan; r. Cottonwood Falls,
Kans.
6. Louis Napoleon, b. Nov. 1855; m. ------ Jan. 1886; d. Mar. 20, 1918.
7. Marcus David, b. Mar. 1861; d. Nov. 1863.
8. Nettie, b. Dec. 1863; married William Y. McLemore, June 1882; d. June
20, 1925.
9. Rose Catherine, b. June 1865; m. Carl Ott, June 1889; d. Nov. 1926.
Thus endeth my contribution, such as it is. If someone else has different
information which is based on legitimate research, primary sources, etc.,
please cite the documentation and I'll happily agree!

Subject: Re: [MODADE] Roll Call - WHEELER
Hi Carlene,
My grandfather, Elijah Harrison Criswell (most often known as Dr.
Harry Criswell) was the son of William Butler Criswell and Rumina
Elizabeth (Bet) Potter. He was born 12/12/1888. They also had
another son, William Roy (Buckl) Criswell b. 09/19/1893. Grandma
Criswell's parents were George Washington Potter and Agnes (Aggie)
Clark Johnson.
Rumina Elizabeth was referred to by my family as grandma Criswell and/
or "Bet" depending on which generation was talking about her. She
married Allen Perry Wheeler 10/08/1871 in Everton, when she was 17
years old. Two years later, 11/22/1873 their son, Monte Wheeler was
born.
This is the only spelling of his name I have ever seen and it was
always pronounced, including by Monte himself, with a silent E, as
in Mont, short for Montana. I would suggest that any other
spellings or pronunciations are misinformed and incorrect.
I grew up in Springfield, but spent every summer in Everton, from the
time I was 4 years old until I graduated from College in 1962. By
that time Monte was into his 90's and his memory was failing. He/we
would spend time sitting on the porch of his house rocking. Although
it was summer and often very hot, he always wore a hat and either a
shawl or coat making him a curious and rather foreboding figure. If
we drove by in the car on the way to the grocery or drug store, he
would simply nod as we honked the horn and waved.
I was never told the circumstances of Perry Wheeler's death. In fact,
it was not until I was an adult that I learned that my great
grandmother had been married and widowed before marrying my great
grandfather. I'm not sure if it is a trait of the generation or
simply my family but, this was one of a number of taboos that have
contributed substantially to the difficulty I have had in tracking
down my ancestors.
My grandmother, Zora Riley Criswell, was 16 when her mother Mary
Lutitia Stephenson Riley died. She had a very hard time hiding her
disdain for her stepmother, Louella Shelton, who did nothing except
live a very long life.
My grandfather, Harry Criswell, for many years knowingly misled the
family about the identity of his grandfather, listing his name as
Elijah rather than Thomas Butler Criswell.
It was not until after his death and my genealogical inquiries that
we began to learn that we had ben misled. Now, more than 50 years
later, I am still trying to "find" my great great grandfather, Thomas
Criswell.
Sorry for the divergence from your question. Hope this helps.
John Criswell

John,
Is your Elijah Harrison Criswell a half-brother to Monte Wheeler thru the
Wheeler or Potter lines? I don't have info on additional marriages for either of
them.

More later on Calvin Wheeler and Asenath Carlock after I do a little more
checking.
Re Monte Wheeler: I have no info on him, but the 1965 death date sounds
right, and I would have guessed Sinking Creek as the burial place. I
remember him and Flo clearly. Their house, which stood across the street
directly west of the Opera House, finally fell down some years ago, I
believe.
I have a schoolboy's autograph book which belonged to my grandfather, J.
Frank Carlock (1875-1930), who grew up in Everton. One of the many
scrawled entries is as follows:
Frank--
Save your money
and buy a mule
and take Florence Davis
to Sunday School.

Carlene, Steve, Linda;
I am working from old family records, admittedly subject to poor
penmanship and sometimes faulty oral transmissions of history. My
records show the following regarding Calvin Wheeler and Asenath
Carlock: (a date or two are different from yours)
Calvin Wheeler b. 09/24/1815 Blount Co, TN d. 02/14/1877 in Dade Co. MO.
Asenath Carlock b. 01/18/1824 Overton Co. TN d. 11/27/1888 in Kansas
They were married 05/17/1844 Dade Co. MO.
I have a question: Allen Perry Wheeler married Rumina Elizabeth
Potter 10/08/1871 in Everton. They had a son, Monte Wheeler b.
11/22/1873. Do you have a death date for Monte, and where he is
buried? Monte was my grandfather's half-brother. (Elijah Harrison
Criswell).
Thanks for your information which fills in many gaps in our extended
family trees.

I have that Calvin and Asenath Wheeler had a daughter, Serepta C. Wheeler, b. Feb 16,
1869, who married William Y. McLemore. Is this accurate information? The birth year would
fit into what you have on Calvin Wheeler's children. The McLemores were connected to
my Preston relatives.
