This is a in reply to Robert GRONDIN's July 26, 2009, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK
Message Board, titled, "Re: Carlock, Ellen J wife of J.C. Union County Il."
I have located James Calvin "J.C." CARLOCK and his family on the 1860 and 1870
censuses for Dongola, Union Co., IL. Ellen is not listed on the 1870 census with James
and the rest of the family, and there is a six-month-old daughter named Mary E. CARLOCK
listed in the household, as well as an 18-year-old housekeeper named Rebecca CARLOCK.
This confirms that the two Ellen CARLOCKs listed in my previous posting are the same
person, with Ellen apparently dying as a result of childbirth soon after the birth of
Mary. As mentioned before, I suspect this is also the same person as the Ellen CARLOCK,
wife of J.C. CARLOCK, listed in Mr. GRONDIN's previous posting, with possible
transcription errors of Ellen's age and middle initial found in the cemetery book he
referenced.
Can anyone identify the Rebecca CARLOCK, housekeeper, age 18, living in James's
household at the time of the 1870 census? It is possible that Rebecca's surname was
erroneously listed as "CARLOCK." I do not find Rebecca in my database.
I also did not find either George CARLOCK or Larisy CARLOCK listed in James's
household on the 1850, 1860, or 1870 censuses. References to these individuals can be
found on pages 618 and 622 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," by
Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. "Larisy" could possibly be a misspelling for one
of the other children: Lindsey (b. 1849), Louisa (b. 1858 - 1859), or Laura (b. 1860 -
1861). Does anyone have any additional information for George or Larisy?
I only found "Louisa" on the 1860 census, and not on the 1870 census. If
"Laura's" age of 9, as listed on the 1870 census, is an error,
"Louisa" and "Laura" could be the same individual. The handwritten
names could easily be read as either "Louisa" or "Laura." Can anyone
clarify this?
