Can anyone verify whether or not Ercie Essel CARLOCK SIMMONS (1883 - 1954) was the
daughter of Tunis House CARLOCK (1832 - 1911) and his wife Samantha Elizabeth RANDALL
(1836 - 1919) of Jennings Co., Indiana? One other possibility is that she may instead be
their granddaughter, the daughter of Tunis Walter CARLOCK (1858 - 1905) and his wife
Violanta BARNES (1861 - 1948).
The 1900 census states that 8 of 13 children born to Samantha Elizabeth RANDALL CARLOCK
were living at the time of the 1900 census. I have identified 12 of those 13 children:
Mahlon Randall CARLOCK, Benjamin Franklin "Frank" CARLOCK, Tunis Walter CARLOCK,
Willis Willard "Willie" CARLOCK, Alice J. "Allie" CARLOCK WIGGAM
(possibly HUDSON), Sarah A. CARLOCK BARNES, Andrew Johnson "Jake or Andy"
CARLOCK, Emeretta "Etta" CARLOCK CALLAWAY, Emma R. CARLOCK ARBUCKLE, Leven W.
CARLOCK, Silas M. CARLOCK, and Eva A. CARLOCK OWEN.
The 1900 census also states that 4 of 6 children born to Violanta BARNES CARLOCK were
living at the time of the 1900 census. I have identified 3 of those children who were
living in Tunis Walter and Violanta's household at the time of the 1900 census:
Burmin Esco CARLOCK, Vionita CARLOCK, and Lond CARLOCK. Since Tunis Walter and Violanta
were married in 1881, their 4th living child would not have been listed on the 1880
census.
Ercie was married and listed on the same census page (sheet 10B) with some of Tunis House
and Samantha's other children at the time of the 1900 census. Tunis Walter's
family was listed a few pages away (sheet 7B) on that census. Since Ercie was born in
1883, she would not be listed on the 1880 census. (Note that I also have not yet been
able to locate Tunis House CARLOCK's family on the 1880 census,) The 1900 census
lists both of her parents as having been born in Indiana, which would be consistent with
Tunis Walter and Violanta's family, but not with Tunis House and Samantha's family
since Tunis House was born in New Jersey, but census details such as these are not always
accurate. Also note that Tunis House and Samantha named their younger girls (Emeretta,
Emma, Eva) names starting with the letter "E," and Ercie would be younger than
those three girls.
Ercie married Elmer Francis SIMMONS (1878 - 1961), Mar. 11, 1900, in Jennings Co., IN.
Their marriage listings on the FamilySearch site do not list the names of Ercie's
parents.
Both Elmer and Ercie are buried in Graceland Cemetery, Fairbury, Livingston Co., Illinois.
I have not yet found them on the 1910 census. They were living in Marion Township,
Jennings Co., IN, 1900; Indian Grove, Livingston Co., IL, 1920; Fairbury, Livingston Co.,
IL, 1930; and Champaign, Champaign Co., IL, 1940.
