I am wondering if anyone has read Captain Carlock's letter to George Washington dtd
Oct 20 1781. As I was transcribing it, I found it to be hysterical. The man clearly had
an awesome sense of humor, and based on the familiar tone he took with General Washington,
it was clear to me that he anticipated Washington to appreciate the tongue in cheek humor.
At the time Hanchrist wrote that letter in 1781 as the Captain & Deputy Quartermaster
General of the Brunswick Troops, he was 66 years old! Lynnmarie
Many have speculated about Hanchrist's and Washington's relationship and
friendship for many, many years, going back to their surveyor days. I do want to mention
that Hanchrist is related by marriage to George Washington. Hanchrist son, Isaac, married
Sarah Ruckman. Sarah's mother was Susan Lewis who was first cousin's once removed
to GW through the Lewis-Warner line. Susan Lewis Ruckman spent many years in her youth
at Warner Hall as did George Washington.
