This is in reply to Edie's (RKRNaples(a)aol.com) Aug. 12, 2006, posting to
this list titled "Martha Jane Carlock." I have found the family of
Martha's
grandparents listed on the 1880 census for the 3rd Ward, Tensas Parish, LA,
as follows:
J. S. CARLOCK Self M Male W 74 KY Laborer NC NC
Priscilla CARLOCK Wife M Female W 67 MS Laborer SC
SC
Henry CARLOCK Son M Male W 26 MS KY MS
Robt CARLOCK Son M Male W 25 MS KY MS
Diciy CARLOCK Dau S Female W 6 MS MS MS
Martha CARLOCK Dau S Female W 3 MS MS MS
Julia CARLOCK Dau S Female W 6 MS MS MS
Several items appear to be incorrect on this census listing, bringing up
some interesting questions.
1. Henry is listed as age 26, when his birthdate is believed to be 5 Jun
1859, making him instead around age 20.
2. Robert married in 1878, but his wife Mary J. ALFORD is not listed in the
household, even though she was living at that time. Robert may have just
been at his parents' house visiting or working. I have several similar
situations with my family in Illinois where adult males relatives were
apparently in the household helping with farmwork.
3. Both Dicey and Martha's ages are slightly incorrect. Dicey should have
been about 9 years old at this time and Martha should have been about 1 year
old at this time. It is not unusual to see similar inconsistencies in
census records.
4. Dicey, Martha, and probably Julia are all incorrectly listed as
daughters of Joseph and Priscilla, when Priscilla would have been too old to
have had children this young. Again, I have seen similar inconsistencies on
censuses.
5. Who is Julia? According to the following source, a Civil War pension
was issued for the widow and child of George Ransom Thomas (or "W")
"Ransom"
CARLOCK, who was both the brother of Dicey and Martha's father Ben and the
first husband of their mother Sarah Catherine "Kate" MONTGOMERY. Since the
ages of 3 other individuals were incorrectly listed on this census, it is
reasonable to assume tht Julia's age was also incorrectly listed. If Julia
were indeed the child of Ransom and Kate, she should have been older than
Dicey. Ransom and Kate's child was probably born around 1863 and would have
been about age 16 at the time of the 1880 census.

Subject: [CARLOCK] Martha Jane Carlock
Martha Jane is daughter of Ben and Sarah Montgomery Carlock. She was
born
31 Aug 1878. That's all I know for sure.
I found a marriage posted on familysearch that says a Martha Jane Carlock
married 5 Aug 1898, Lincoln MS, to Thomas Nathan Davis. That post didn't
include her birthdate or other identifying data.
I'm looking for any information about Martha Jane and her family. Have
tried unsuccessfully so far, in 1900 census.
Thanks for any help.
