Subject: Re: [CARLOCK] Catherine CARLOCK (1725 - 1801) m. Matthew WHITMAN
Hello ladies,
I believe it is quiet possible that Elizabeth and Mary Whitman are one in the same, a
daughter of Charles and Sarah Mathias Whitman. She would be a sister to my Matthew
Whitman m. Katherine Stalnaker White. Matthew and Mary/Elizabeth had another sister
Barbara and also a brother named GEORGE. This is proven by DAR document which states
"Matthew took his brother George's place" (for approx. 3 mos. which enabled
Matthew to draw a pension) during Revolutionary War. Now whether George's last name
was Whitman or something else remains to be seen. I believe Mary/Elizabeth, Barbara,
Matthew, and George's parents to be JOHN HENRY WHTIMAN and Catherine Carlock.
The only thing that troubles me is WHY did Catherine Carlock Whitman sign her name on her
will dtd. 1801 as Catherine Carlock AND not as Catherine Whitman. Women did not use their
maiden names during this time period. I have copy of this will. I have been unable to
find her grave. She is suppose to be buried near Beverly, WV (VA previously). I've
looked for Catherine Carlock and Catherine Whitman. Catherine also had a law suit
regarding property in Bucks Co., PA also using the name Catherine CARLOCK. How she came
to own this property in unknown. Women did not usually own property during this time
period. If the property belonged to her husband and he died it would then have passed to
the oldest son, which would have been Matthew. Catherine would not have passed the
property to Matthew in her will because he would have already owned it. However, in her
will she left said property to "my son Matthew". Since, George is mentioned, he
may have been dead by this time.!
Matthew is the only child mentioned. She did leave something to Matthew's daughter
Betsy real name Elizabeth. In Matthew's will 1836 (I have copy) the property in Bucks
Co., PA is not mentioned. Therefore, he must have already sold it before his death. I
haven't been able to find record of this transaction. Any information, suggestions,
etc. greatly appreciated. Have a good day, ladies.
