This is a follow-up to my June 19, 2008, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board,
titled "CARLOCK Family of Fulton Co., IL, located at the following site, requesting
help with locating members of the CARLOCK family on the 1850 census for Fulton Co., IL:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/548/mb.ashx
One CARLOCK researcher was kind enough to send me information from a page of the Astoria,
Fulton Co., IL, census which included the families of brothers Joseph A. CARLOCK and Jacob
C. CARLOCK.
However, I am still trying to find a listing for Adornia Mariah "Mariah" HURLEY
CARLOCK (b. 1819, OH), widow of James Madison CARLOCK (1810 - 1849), and her children.
Her known children were James Madison (or Marcellus) CARLOCK, b. 23 Feb. 1838, OH;
Harrison CARLOCK; and Ellen S. CARLOCK, b. OH, who m. Frances M. HUFF, 1867, Lincoln Co.,
MO. James Madison CARLOCK (1810 - 1849) was a brother to the above-mentioned Joseph A.
CARLOCK and Jacob C. CARLOCK.
I am primarily looking for a possible daughter named Adarna Mariah "Dane"
CARLOCK, b. 28 Oct 1849, Astoria, Fulton Co., IL. Specifically, I am attempting to
determine if the Mary M. CARLOCK, age 5, b. OH, listed in the h/h of the above-mentioned
Joseph A. CARLOCK, at the time of the 1850 census is the same person as the younger Adarna
Mariah CARLOCK (b. 1849).
Maria CARLOCK, age 15, b. OH, appears as a servant in the h/h of David and Julia A. MARSH,
Astoria, Fulton Co., IL, at the time of the 1860 census. Also living nearby was Samantha
CARLOCK, age 15, b. OH, a "dom." living in the h/h of Ezra and Isabella WIGGINS,
Astoria, Fulton Co., IL.
Both Mary M. CARLOCK, age 5, and Samantha E. B. CARLOCK, age 4, appeared in the h/h of
Joseph A. and Margaret A. CARLOCK, at the time of the 1850 census, Astoria, Fulton Co.,
IL. Also living in the same h/h at the time of the 1850 census were William H. CARLOCK,
age 7, and Crawford C. CARLOCK, age 1. The mother of these children, Margaret A. HURLEY
CARLOCK, reportedly died 15 Dec. 1852, as reported in a document by her sister-in-law, the
above-mentioned Adornia Mariah "Mariah" HURLEY CARLOCK. (I do not yet know what
the biological relationship was between these two women. Were they sisters?)
Adarna Mariah "Dane" CARLOCK's birthdate of 28 Oct. 1849, as reported by
some of her descendants, does not perfectly match the approximate birthdate of ca. 1845,
as calculated from the above-referenced 1850 and 1860 censuses for "Mary M." and
"Maria" CARLOCK. Furthermore, descendants of Adarna Mariah "Dane"
CARLOCK state that they believe her mother's maiden name may have been HUNT. The
above-mentioned Adornia Mariah "Mariah" HURLEY CARLOCK married as her second
husband James M. HUNTER, 18 Sept. 1851, Fulton Co., IL. The "HUNT" and
"HUNTER" seem like too much of a coincidence.
If I could find a separate listing from the Mary M. CARLOCK listing for Adornia Mariah
"Mariah" CARLOCK on the 1850 census, this would help me determine whether or not
Mary M./Maria CARLOCK and Adarna Mariah CARLOCK were the same person, probably a daughter
of Joseph and Margaret CARLOCK, or different people, with Adarna Mariah CARLOCK probably a
daughter of James Madison CARLOCK and Adornia Mariah "Mariah" HURLEY CARLOCK
HUNTER.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
