This is a follow-up to the June 19, 2008, posting to the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board by
"generationsb4" titled, "Re: Jacob Carlock father of Joseph 'the
cripple of Prairie City Illinois.'"
There have been several queries to this message board over the past couple of years
regarding the ancestry of Adarna Mariah "Dane" CARLOCK. The following two
sources list Adarna Mariah CARLOCK's parents as William CARLOCK, b. ca. 1823, Astoria,
Fulton Co., IL, and HUNT, b. ca. 1827, Astoria, Fulton Co., IL, but to the best of my
knowledge neither I nor anyone else has yet been able to identify this William CARLOCK and
his ancestry:
1. LDS Church, FamilySearch,
(
http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/Search/frameset_search.asp), AFN: 1TKH-5CP.
2. WASSON, Janet (jjwasson(a)gilanet.com), NM Family Group Sheet for Thomas Benton WASSON
Family, Nov. 9, 2003,
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/newmexico/wtbw.htm.
It appears that the Mariah A. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1845, whom you listed as d/o Joseph A.
CARLOCK and Margaret "Martha" A. HURLEY is the same person as Adarna Mariah
"Dane" CARLOCK, b. Oct. 28, 1849, Astoria, Fulton Co., IL. What source do you
have for Mariah A. CARLOCK being a daughter of Joseph CARLOCK?
What first caught my eye was the surname HURLEY. Joseph's brother James Madison
CARLOCK m. Adornia Mariah "Mariah" HURLEY, probably in Darke Co., OH. Adornia
Mariah "Mariah" HURLEY CARLOCK married her second husband, James M. HUNTER,
Sept. 18, 1851, Schuyler Co., IL. The Census On-Line map located at the following site
shows Fulton Co. and Schuyler Co. as being next to each other, along the west side of the
Illinois River:
http://www.census-online.com/links/IL/
I am not aware of Joseph A. CARLOCK and James Madison CARLOCK having a brother named
William. There is also a similarity between the surnames "HUNT" and
"HUNTER." I theorize that Joseph's first wife, Margaret "Martha"
A. HURLEY probably died before the time of the 1860 census, and that Adarna, Samantha, and
possibly some of their other siblings went to live with other families following their
mother's death. Samantha was probably living in the household of Ezra and Isabelle
WIGGINS at the time of the 1860 census, and Adarna Mariah was probably living in the
household of David and Julia S. MARSH at the time of the 1860 census, both in Astoria
Township, Fulton Co., IL. Since Adarna was living in Fulton Co. instead of Schuyler Co.,
it seems much more likely that she was Joseph's daughter instead of his brother
James's daughter.
Following is the information, including sources, that I presently have for Adarna Mariah
"Dane" CARLOCK and her family:
ADARNA MARIAH "DANE" CARLOCK (POSSIBLY ADOPTED) (WILLIAM CARLOCK) was born 28
Oct 1849 in Astoria, Fulton Co., IL (1860 census says b. OH, age 15), and died 14 Sep 1940
in Hatch, Doña Ana Co., NM. She married THOMAS BENTON WASSON 01 Apr 1873 in Petersburg,
Menard Co., IL, son of WILLIAM WASSON and FRANCINA FLETCHER. He was born 22 Apr 1847 in
Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co., IN, and died 29 Sep 1935 in Hatch, Doña Ana Co., NM.
More About ADARNA MARIAH "DANE" CARLOCK (POSSIBLY ADOPTED):
Adoption: Possibly Crow Indian, adopted into the CARLOCK family
Burial: Hatch Garden of Memories Cemetery, Hatch, Doña Ana Co., NM
Miscellaneous: Note there is a Samantha CARLOCK, age 15, b. OH, living nearby in the h/h
of Ezra and Isabella WIGGINS, Astoria Township, Fulton Co., IL, 1860.
Residence: Living in h/h of David and Julia S. MARSH, Astoria Township, Fulton Co., IL,
1860, listed as age 15, b. OH. This compiler can not decipher the word written for
"Muriah" under the occupation column
