Message Board Post:
There were two Fredrick KERLOCKs, one George KERLOCK, and one George CERLAUGH living in
Salisbury District, Mecklenburg Co., NC, at the time of the 1790 census. The two
Fredricks were probably Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, b. 1720, Holland (s/o David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH) and Frederick CARLOCK, b. 1750, Augusta Co.,
VA (s/o Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/GERLOCH, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH.).
One of the Georges was probably George CARLOCK (s/o Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH). This first George married Fanny Mildren
PLEMONS.
I am attempting to determine the father of the second George CARLOCK who m. Millison (or
Mellison). Mellison KERLOCK is listed as head of household in Lincoln Co., NC, at the
time of the 1810 census. According to the following source, George and Millison had a
daughter named Esther for whom Abraham ALEXANDER was appointed guardian at the time of her
father's death: MARLER, Kathleen, Families of Cabarrus County North Carolina
1792-1815 (Baltimore, MD, Clearfield Company, Inc., by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.,
2004), p. 25. Note that I have found some errors in this author's books, such as
confusing the two above-mentioned Frederick CARLOCKs. Additional research is needed to
fully sort out these two Frederick and George CARLOCKs.
This second George is most likely a grandson of Frederick CARLOCK (b. 1720).
Frederick's brother Conrad CARLOCK and his wife Mary apparently at one time owned land
on Buffalo Creek in Mecklenburg Co., NC, but records indicate that he probably returned to
Virginia by about 1774. According to the following source, Conrad died without issue:
CARLOCK, Marion Pomeroy, History of the Carlock Family, 1989 reprint edition (Los Angeles,
CA: 1929, Marion Pomeroy Carlock), 33.
There was also a third George CARLOCK, my direct ancestor, living in the area at the time,
but he was too young to have been listed as a head of household in 1790. This third
individual was George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC (s/o David CARLOCK, Frederick
CARLOCK/CARELOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans Peter GERLOCH/GERLACH). George's father
David CARLOCK owned land in the portion of Mecklenburg Co., NC, which became Cabarrus Co.,
Dec. 29, 1792. Re: LORE, Virginia W., Map of Concord, Cabarrus County, NC, as laid out
in 1796 (
http://www.ncgenweb.us/cabarrus/Concord1796.htm, NCGenWeb), This third George
CARLOCK m. Rachel LANDERS, Oct. 11, 1805, Warren Co., KY.
Since Frederick CARLOCK (b. 1720) already had a son named George (b. 1740), and
Frederick's son David already had a son named George (b. ca. 1779), this means that
the second George CARLOCK who m. Millison was probably a son of Frederick's son George
(b. 1740), Frederick's son Frederick (b. 1750), George's son Henry (in Rutherford
Co., NC, 1790), or an as yet unidentified son of Frederick (b. 1720).
Please let me know if you find any further information regarding this second George
CARLOCK, his wife Millison, or their descendants. The 1810 census shows two free white
males aged 16 - 25 and one free white female aged 10 - 16 living in Millison's
household in Lincoln Co., NC. The female was possibly Esther. However, we cannot
automatically assume that the two males were children of Millison. They could have been
other relatives or hired help.
