Dear Sue,
Thanks so much for your swift reply!
Would you know anything about a posting on GenForum, CARLOCK FAMILY
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carlock/
dated 01-3101, by Fran Deen?
She mentions a book "The Beckoning Hand" by Joe Jackson. and that SARAH
McDONALD w/o JOB CARLOCK was the daughter of MICHAEL McDONALD, itinerant Scottish trader
who migrated from VA to the Cherokee Nation abt 1774 and married JUDY ELIZABETH MODAC,
(her Christian name) a full blood Cherokee woman.
NANCY CARLOCK, (d/o of JOB & SARAH McDONALD CARLOCK ) married CLEMENS SMITH MEANS and
their daughter MARTHA MEANS married SAMUEL WILLIAM TATE.
It has long been family lore that MARTHA was of Native American blood, (Cherokee). If
SARAH McDONALD was the daughter of the Cherokee woman, then MARTHA would be 1/4. We have
been trying to prove this for years!
Would love to hear from anyone with info on above.

This is in reply to the following e-mail which I received from Winnie J. TATE MORGAN
(flake(a)tstar.net) yesterday. Although I do not find a Jacob CARLOCK who matches
Winnie's description, the following individual matches most of her description. Does
anyone have any additional information that may be of help to Winnie?
Job CARLOCK (s/o Hanchrist CARLOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH), b. Aug. 27,
1777, Rockbridge Co. (now Smythe Co.), VA; m#1. Sarah MCDONALD, 1798; m#2. Elizabeth
JOHNSON, 1816; d. Feb. 1855, Overton Co., TN; bd. Allred Cemetery, near Alpine, Overton
Co., TN. According to page 598 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by
Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, Job had 8 children by his first wife and 9 children by his
second wife. One of his children by his first wife was Nancy, b. Mar. 10, 1801, who m.
Clem MEANS. Job did have a brother named Jacob, b. 1775, d. 1840 - 1850, but the
information about Jacob and his family found on pages 577 and 578 of the same book makes
no mention of him ever being in Overton Co., TN.

I am searching for a JACOB CARLOCK who sold land to SAMUEL TATE on March 23. 1814 in
Overton County TN.
I descend from TATE and CARLOCK. There is a double connection.
HANSCHRIST GERLACH/CARLOCK is as far as I can go back on CARLOCK.
A Presbyterian minister named CLEMMENS SMITH MEANS married NANCY CARLOCK; their
daughter, MARTHA MEANS married SAMUEL WILLIAM TATE.
I think there is an earlier connection between TATE, McDONALD and CARLOCK but I have not
been able to establish it.
Please e-mail me direct flake(a)tstar.net if you can give me any information.
Thanks,
Winnie J. Tate Morgan
