This is in reply to Wendy PATRICK's (ScotyBmeup(a)cs.com), Sept. 13, 1999, posting to
the RootsWeb CARLOCK Message Board titled "Carlock Family",
I believe your ggg-grandfather "Mark" CARLOCK to be Marcus D. CARLOCK, b. ca.
1865, MS, s/o James M. CARLOCK and his wife Sarah C.
Marcus and his family can be found on the following censuses:
1870 United States Federal Census, Town 3, Range 6, Alcorn Co., MS, pg. 24, enumerated
June 25, 1870, dwelling 38, family 38.
1880 United States Federal Census, Internet, 3rd District, Alcorn Co., MS, pg. ?,
supervisor's district 1, enumeration district 6(?), enumerated June 16, 1880, dwelling
9, family 9.
I show Marcus's CARLOCK ancestry as follows:
Johan Peter "Hans" GERLACH
David GERLACH/CARLOCK
Frederick CARLOCK/CARELOCK
Frederick CARLOCK
John CARLOCK, Sr.
James M. CARLOCK
Marcus D. CARLOCK
Also note that on page 621 of the book "History of the Carlock Family," the
author lists a Marcus DeWitt CARLOCK, deceased at the time the book was published, as s/o
Thomas Green CARLOCK and Leone WILKINSON. I have no further information on this Marcus
DeWitt CARLOCK at this time. It is possible that the author erroneously listed your
ggg-grandfather under the wrong parents. According to my records, your Marcus was a first
cousin to Thomas Green CARLOCK, with Thomas's father Samuel (or Simon) Green CARLOCK
being a brother to your Marcus's father James M. CARLOCK.
Note that I have had a great deal of difficulty sorting out the various southern CARLOCK
lines, partly because of the use of alternative spellings of the surname, and partly
because much of the southern information was either left out or incorrectly reported in
the above-mentioned book. Sorting out these various southern lines is still a work in
progress.
To further confuse the situation, your Marcus D. CARLOCK did have a first cousin names
Marcus DeWitt "DeWitt" CARLOCK (1852 - 1931), also listed on page 621 of the
above-mentioned book, as s/o the above-mentioned Samuel (or Simon) Green CARLOCK. This
Marcus DeWitt CARLOCK's son Marcus DeWitt CARLOCK, Jr., (1907 - 1995), is also listed
on page 621 of the above-mentioned book. Not listed in the book is Marcus DeWitt CARLOCK,
Jr.'s, adopted son Marcus DeWitt CARLOCK, III, (1939 - 2000) of Winnsboro, Wood Co.,
TX.
Also note that I have located your gg-grandmother Clarisa "Clarisy" CARLOCK on
the following census, living in the household of her mother and stepfather Jack S. ERWIN:
1910 United States Federal Census, Black Oak Township, Craighead Co., AR, supervisor's
district 1, enumeration district 13, sheet 3B, enumerated Apr. 20, 1910, dwelling 51,
family 53.
